I have an NEC ND-3540A, and it is great - not noted for its ripping (reading) speed but burns like the wind :^)
NEC has a great webpage, with frequent Firmware updates.
Their burners do not support booktyping of DVD+R media. This is not a problem unless you have an old standalone DVD player from the 1990's, so 99 out of 100 people should be okay.

LoL - what have you done?
FW v/1.05 is available to you from NEC

Suggest you flash ASAP. Forget about booktype.
Let us know if you bring it 'back to life',

No problem then.

Benq 1620: This drive will booktype using Nero. All I had to do was tick the box in DVD Shrink to booktype to dvd-rom.q-suite also booktypes, but you have to have B7-V9 fw or higher. That model will burn +8x media at 12x and 16x if you leave the settings at max.

Benq 1640: Nero wouldn't booktype for this drive.I had to download a separate utility called q-suite 2.0
qsuite can set the booktyping/control overburn/has a scanning test/and other features.I love the overburn protection. Verbatim +16x scan way better when burned at 8x and 12x. Be cautious of slow burns because they give me a lot more errors.

Plextor 740: This is a rebadged benq 1640. Says something about benq when top of the line brand like plextor using rebadged benqs.

Other plextors should be able to booktype, but may have to use a separate utility called plextools.

Lite-on can booktype, but also has to have a separate utility.

I've got 3 benqs all booktyping and the compatability of my booktyped backups are phenomenal. The dash format is less compatable from both my 1620s. I don't even bother with it much, until my shiny inkjet printables- ty-g02 arrive.

I just checked newegg.com for their weekend sales and all they had was the NEC 3550 and they may have had a lite-on drive on sale. They have that plextor 740 for around $59 after a $20 rebate and the benq 1655 lightscribe for around $50. They are out of the 1620 and 1640, bummer.

If you got the room in your tower, just use that NEC as your reader and the new drive as the writer. It'll save a lot of wear and tear on your burner. I've got over 3000+ burns on my original 1620 and she's going as strong as day 1.
