Hello, I am having a burning problem with my NEC3520. I updated the firmware a few months ago. I just bought a new batch of 16x TDK discs today, and I'm getting a failed burn every other disc. 1 good burn, 1 bad burn. So far, I've lost 6 discs. Could it be that my firmware is now out of date? Can anyone link me to the latest firmware for my model burner? Any info. or help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You should post your burning error log, so people can analyze it and help you, so we can see if is a problem with software, hardware, media, burning speed....

You are running low on memory.Don't multitask while you burn, close any unnecessary operations(antivirus, internet...),and set the priority high for your burning process.

You are burning too close to the edge of the disk, the file is too big. If you are using DVD Shrink or Nero Recode, try to set the target file size to about 4300 Gb. 4465 is too big

Your burner doesn't like the media. TDK is not great quality. Try to some verbatims, TY, maxell MIJ

If you had some very good media, like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden,MAYBE you could dare to burn at 16x! Even though some media is rated at 16x, burning at lower speeds(x4,x8) you have a greater chance of a successful burn.

Aslo, I see you are using DVD-R. You can only change booktype for DVD+R(W) media. but the burn did not fail because of that.

Try and fix these problems and see how it goes.

I have used over 300 hundred of these disks at 16x w/ no problem. How do I change the taget file size? I'm using nero express. Also,I have not defragged in a couple of weeks. Could this have anything do to with the useage of my memory? And how do I set my burn priority to high? Thanks.
All I got is tdk right now. Well, I do have 3 fujis left from my last pack.

Degragged? Don't know what that means.Oh, Defrag? You should do that.
Now, you say had 300+ successful burns @x16 on TDK. Well, I personally wouldn't buy TDKs or burn faster than x8(if you take a minute to read some media forums, you will see what I mean). As for shrinking the file, here is a guide:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/recode2.htm

Instead of DVD-5[4.7Gb], drop down the menu and select custom and enter 4300

here is also a very good link about good media and burning speeds.

If you don't have other media right now, try the other options. As for the priority, when the burning process starts you should see an option to change it in the left lower corner. If not, Ctrl+Alt+Del and open Windows Task manager. Click processes, find Nero,right click and then set prioity.
What media code are those Fujis? You can tell if you load them in DVD Decrypter or Nero CD-DVD Speed.

Thanks for your help. I just want you to know that I am not one of those people who just posts right away without reading around the forum first. I have read a good deal of info. on this forum. It is indeed very helpful and I recommend it to others. I hardly post for problems, I usually find an answer by looking. I have seen several good media lists and tdk is on there, that's why I buy them. I must admit, I never really took the time out to read about burning at 16x vs burning at lower speeds other than lower speeds better assure you of a good burn. It's only because I've been burning at max speed since I started buying 16x discs and other than a firmware update that I needed, I haven't had any problems burning at that speed. Once again thank you for your help and I will see how it goes.

P.S. Will changing the target size affect the quality of the burn in any way? Also, those fujis I have are media id: RITEKF1

I hear what you say. I rarely ask for help myself, most of the answers are here on the site, although sometimes is so much info that one can feel overwhelmed. As for TDK, is I remember, it was an old site, Digitalfaq, or something like that, I am not sure. That is outdated. Some members report now that they have bought TDK made by Taiyo Yuden. I don't know. Fujis, if made in japan, they should be great quality. That's why I asked what media code are they?

As for the quality of the DVD, you will not notice. I had 2 hr movies that I compressed to 55-65% and the quality on tv was still excellent.
If you had successful burns with present media, you should be able to do it again. All other factors matter also. At some point, no matter what I did, I couldn't get a good burn with Nero. I tried DVD Decrypter and ....just fine. So, I uninstalled Nero(it was a craked version).If you try all the above and still no success, you might want to try a different burning engine to see if also Nero could be the problem( although, all that I mentioned above WILL affect the burn). I say DVDD because is free and very easy to use.

Did you open Nero Recode and follow the guide?

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/recode2.htm

or http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/31_1.html

You have a drop down window in the lower right corner of the screen that says "Fit to Target" You can modify that, select custom and enter the value you want(4300 is safe)

I don't honestly know about Nero Express.I mostly use Nero Recode for DVD backup and Nero Vision to convert avi to DVD.But if you don't have Nero Recode, than you encode with Shrink, and burn with Nero, right? Then all you have to do is shrink the file with DVD Shrink to a manageable size.

Our resident media expert Doc Ty aka kivory666 hates TDK media worse than CMC media if you can believe that. TDK is not rated so highly here at AD by most of our regular members..
I did a test to see if 16x burns were possible and what affect it would have on the discs. 16x burning is asking for trouble. It can be done, but you are saving 1.5 minutes off what you would get from an 8x burn, and you loose a lot of quality in that time. Check this thread out and make up your own mind..
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265933
The errors go waaaay up on 16x burns, and you may or may not be able to see that on playback. My first 16x burn attempt produced a coaster on very good Verbatim media rated at 16x.
And ONLY DVD+R media can be booktyped to DVD-ROM. That error you got was because you were trying to change booktype on a DVD-R disc, and it cant be done.

The first media that I bought a while ago,it was TDK(cheap sale). When I posted on AD, the doc jumped in immidiately and said nono. I was lucky I had not open the spindle.
300+ good burns on TDK, @x16, that is amazing to me!

@bandoogie
I would personally get the 6.6.0.18 version for Nero, as for the latest,6.6.1.4, many people report having problems specially when trying to burn using Shrink. Maybe they will fix the bugs meanwhile

@cyprusrom
Yes, Doc hates those TDKs. I know Nero 7 positively has bugs as alkohol is reporting them. Hadn't heard anything on Nero 6 update having bugs until you pointed it out. The 6.6.0.18 version was very good and stable. I haven't updated my Nero 7 because of the bugs, and things the new update takes away.
And "good" burns is a relative term. A more scientific approach is to do a disc quality scan with Nero and see how many errors you really have on a 16x burn. Everytime i have seen it, or done it, the quality is ALWAYS better when you kick the speed back down to 8x or less. Yes, the burners and media are rated at 16x, but that doesn't mean it is the best/only speed to use. And the ONLY thing ppl are gaining on a 16x burn is less burn time. And that time savings is going to cost you in quality. I can wait 1.5 minutes more for an 8x burn and get much better quality. Everytime i see someone talking about doing a 16x burn, i try to discourage it. I guess i shouldn't care if someone wants to reduce quality significantly to save a little time. But many ppl read these posts, and learn something from it. Hopefully the ones that want to do the best quality back-ups will understand the dangers of MaxBurn ..ha ha..:)

@MaxBurn
I know what you mean. The time saved when burning @x16 vs x8 is practically insignificant IMO.
As for the latest of Nero 6, people were reporting problems when trying to burn with DVD Shrink. other than that, I am not aware of any other bug.
As for the "good burns" you are right. What I actually wanted to say was completed,"successful" burns :~)!

Thanks again, guys. I have not tried burning at 8x in a good while, but when I used to buy 8x discs, then switched to 16x discs, my burn speed was cut in half(8x was around 10-12 min. & 16x was around 5-6 min). I have been burning at 12x and I did a few so far and no problem. Obviously, there must be something wrong with my pc somewhere b/c my time discrepancy isn't anywhere near 1.5 minutes, although like I said, I haven't tried burning at 8x in a while which includes before I updated my firmware, so maybe if I try it now, the burn times will be where they should be. As I am at work right now, I can't try 8x, but I will as soon as I get home and post my results. I will also donwload the Nero 6.6.0.18 as per cyprusroms' suggestions. Now concerning the media issue, I only opened one of my tdk spindles(I bought two 100 spindles). Should I return those? It's funny, I never had problems with memorex discs either, but I stopped purchasing them b/c people here on AD said they suck. I did start out pruchasing ritek ridatas(at least 300) and did try 100 tayo yudens before I started switching to 16x discs. I also tried one pack of ritek mattes, but I did not like them. So, is there a general consensus here on AD that riteks and tayos are your best bet? If so, what would be recommended after that?
