Hi.

I've been searching and reading through a lot of threads for over an hour now, I have tried different things to solve the problem, but sadly, I haven't found anything that really did solve the problem...

I've been burning DVDs for over a year now, and never had a problem. But since a few weeks, I can't burn any more DVDs... I get the Power Calibration Error...

Can someone please help me? I would be very grateful cause this problem is kind of frustrating!!

Here's my log:

Hi,

i'm sorry whompus, but the link you gave me does net exist anymore...

I went to this link, instead: http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads//FlashFirmware/

and chose ND-1100A.

That's my drive, right? Cause, when I'm trying to install the Firmware update, it doesn't work... I did just like the instruction says, but my drive wasn't found...

Can you help me?

Yeah thats the one. It may not be working because you have it set as slave. It should be master for optimum performance. Also make sure you dont have intel application accelorator running at time of flash.

TDK and the other media you listed is not a good choice of media if you are having burning problems. Use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden to eliminate media as the culprit. Power calibration errors are usually either firmware out of date, or poor media.
Also that 22mb of memory is not enough and you need to shut down everything not needed for burning.
Nero's response to that error:
Quote:
9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service.
Try different media after firmware update and you will probably not have to do the last suggestion from Nero.

@jizmak: I already tried that, didn't help... :(

@MaxBurn: The DVDs I use are the same I used for about 2 years now... So I don't think that this might be the problem...
The firmware update does not find my drive... And I do not know how to set it as Master...

Anyone knows how to configure it as master?

Thx to all

To configure it as master. You will have to take it out of the computer to access the back of the drive. There you will see jumper and it will have markings on it. MA = master CS = cable select and SL = slave. You will have to set the other drive as slave if you change this drive to master. You may even need to change where they go back into the case to make the cable conect right. The end connection on the cable is for master and the middle is for slave.

This is true for most drives, but some don't have the markings by the jumpers. If the markings are not on the back by the jumper(s), then look on the top of the drive (some have it on the label instead).

You will have to make sure to set the jumper on your dvd-rom (HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B) to slave as well. You can only have 1 master per ide channel.

Hi again,

I've now set my drive as Master (it was actually pretty simple :), thx for your help), but the firmware update still does not find the drive...

As instructed on the firmware site, I disabled my slave drive...

Anyone knows what might be wrong?? Or is there an other possibility to get the firmware update?

Do not flash with incorrect or unapproved firmware.
Doing so may destroy the DVD drive or reduce its functionally!

1. This is a Windows-based flash utility. Using "Add or Remove Programs" on the "Control Panel", verify that neither of the following programs are installed on the system. These applications must be un-installed prior to proceeding or the firmware update will fail.

+ Intel Ultra-ATA Storage Driver
+ Intel Application Accelerator
Note: These applications can be reinstalled after the firmware has been updated. The latest files can be found at www.intel.com .

@Benelot
Because your firmware was so far behind, you may have to go with the oldest version you can find and try to get that to take before you go to the latest. I call it the Progressive firmware update method..
Now looking at the firmware site i see 1.90 listed as the oldest one here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=301
I would try to get that one to take, and if it does, try the latest 1.93. If the latest version still wont take, keep going up a revision at a time until you do get there. I had to do that with my liteon drive. It didnt recoginze the drive when i tried to go with the most current version. Went to the oldest version listed (which was still ahead of my burners version) and it took. Then went to the most current, and it recoginzed the drive and took. Its worth a try. Even the 1.90 may not work as it is 10 versions ahead of your 1.80 if they did a revision for each number increase.

I think I'm gonna buy a new DVD burner... Any suggestions?

Sorry Benelot, i forgot about this thread.
I looked for an older version of firmware, and this site looks like it has some of the stuff thats newer than your version, but not the newest 1.93. So, if you can get 1.90 or any of the others listed to take, you should be able to get 1.93 to take next. Worth a try at least:
older firmware
http://etna.rpc1.org/nec/index.html
Just make sure you select one for the NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A.
Here is a direct link to 1.90 firmware for that drive
http://www.opendrivers.com/freedownload/214399/nec-nd-1100a-dvd+r...

and here is the latest update if you get the older stuff to take:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=301

It is also possible to cross flash that drive to ND1300A.
http://www.warp2search.net/esselbach/story.php?id=17396
http://www.justcdr.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=138
Read these articles before you do that:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/7181
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=14038&start=325

But, id do the cross flash as a last resort.
Here is a list of firmware versions

Hi. No problem that you forgot about it.

http://etna.rpc1.org/nec/index.html
I don't know how to use those drivers. On the bottom of the page, it's explained, but i'm pretty noobish in those things... I don't know how to get into DOS Mode, and I do not really understand what I'd have to do if I was in Dos Mode... Can you help me out here?

The other links you gave me do not all work, and if they work, the download stops suddenly. Moreover, it took 20 min to get to 50%, which is surely not normal.

ATM, I can't use my drive, even not to read a disc. Don't know why... I tried to use the flashtool from the site you gave me in normal mode, maybe that's why it isn't working atm.

Btw, is the drive I have atm a good drive? Because if it's not, I'll probably buy a new and better one... This firmware update is starting to get on my nerves because I don't know what to do to get that f*cking drive working again... edit: (this is not against you, I appreciate your help!)

You state:
"ATM, I can't use my drive, even not to read a disc. Don't know why... I tried to use the flashtool from the site you gave me in normal mode, maybe that's why it isn't working atm."

If the drive isn't toast from trying to flash it, I would try the 1.93 update as I suggested above and see if you can get that drive working again.

You're right, I quickly skimmed when I should of read carefully. Either way, based on your statement above, it looks like the drive is toast, so find a nice place in your backyard to bury it and take aabbccdd suggestion, get a better drive.
