Hello, I'm hoping one of our resident Nero experts can help me, before I throw my laptop out the window! My Dell Inspiron 600m crashed recently w/ Nero 6. I was not able to save the trial version of the program so, I went ahead and purchased Nero7. Nero 6 worked perfectly for me in burning DVDs. (I have Anydvd/Slyfox!) I keep getting error message: cannot read file %s! The program reads the disc and I can see it in the preview screen but, at the last step, it analyzes for about 40 secs and gives me the error. I have tried several DVDs that I had no problems downloading on Nero 6. (I use a SOny dual layer exteranl DVD writer) I know it is Nero because I'm able to copy the same DVD's on CLone DVD, which I have a trial version only. I have downloaded all known updates. Funny sidebar: I called for my free tech support and I stupidly admitted to the tech guy, I have Anydvd software and he practically hung up on me! Jeeez! He told me there was nothing in thier data base to help me with my problem! Please help!

Quote: There are plenty of technical resources on the Web that discuss cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs). Most times you won't need to worry about this technobabble. That is, until one it day it suddenly appears and you think - what the hell does that mean? In simple terms, a CRC is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transfered. It's a checking procedure that quickly identifies when data has been damaged. If you get this message, it means that the file being read by your PC or software is corrupted. However, it does not mean all the data is lost forever. When data is transfered, it is usually in small blocks and each block is given a CRC value. If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination, the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.
Make sure you have a clean disk.Could also be a bad press.

Thanks for the advice and explanations. Any ideas why Clone DVD was able to copy the same DVD with no issues? It seems Nero 7 really has an issue because it won't the same DVD's? Should I try to uninstall Nero and reinstall and hope whatever has been corrupted can be repaired?

from what I found on other threads, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/300078 the last version of Nero has some bugs. You should go back to Nero 6 or if you can find Nero 7.0.1.4. Also nero 6.6.1.14 has some issues when using DVD Shrink. I personally stayed with 6.6.0.18, which has worked great for me.
As for why Colne was able to read the same dvd, i don't know.I never used Clone DVD. But when I had problems with nero for example not reading some DVD, I used DVD Decrypter. I think DVDD is much better at ignoring some minor reading errors than Nero(DVD has an optionthat enables that). It could be the case for Clone also, but I am not familiar with it. But again, just speculating.

Personally, I don't use anydvd. I have heard of too many issues with it for me to waste my money. DVD Decrypter (free program), DVDFab Decrypter (free program), and VobBlanker (free program). all work well for me, and I haven't had any of the "not compressable" errors since using VobBlanker. Try those programs before you assume that it is in fact Nero 7 causing the issue. I didn't really see anything in the log file preventing the burn other than the "not compressable" error.
There are some how to guides on afterdawn for each of these programs.
If you want to go back to Nero 6, you can download it here:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/nero-up.php Good Luck.

I doubt this is the issue, as the "noncompressable" files are only 0.01MB!
And yes, there are many free programs out there that do the job. that is what I use. You can read the following guide, and replace Nero step with DVD Shrink if you want evrything free!
http://www.k-probe.com/backup-newly-release-DVD-DVDFAB-Decrypter-...
if you want to use DVD Shrink, I would rather get Nero 6.6.0.18 instead of 6.6.1.14, unless they fixed the bug!

Thank you very ;much for the suggestions. But again, I have to stress my issue one more time. I wish I could attached the screens in her from my Nero issue. I already paid for AnyDVD and it has never failed me. SO, can't take that back. AnyDVD was able to allow Nero to start the copying process. As I mentioned before, the Preview screen "reads" the whole DVD with no problems, I'm able to preview the movie before the encoding is started for about 2 minutes. THis tells me that AnyDVD did it's job. The problem seems to be that for some reason, Nero can not read the movie it just stored in a temp folder for burning. THat is when the error occurs. I don't want to give up on Nero because it worked so flawlessly before. SOmething afte my laptop crashed was checked or unchecked and I'm hoping someone knows what that is.

No, you don't have to give up Anydvd if you have already paid for it, as it is the best decrypter uout there.
Are you trying to do a burn at once or first you save the files on HDD?
Post your log.

Well, not sure if you area familiar with Nero's dvd burning process. It gives you 3 choices, burn at once, advance analysis (were it burns the movie on my hard disk first, providing a noticable difference in quality but longer burning time, and slow recording. I have tried all three and get the same code. "FAILED TO OPEN FILE%'s" I want to get rid of 7 and install 6, but I have a bad feeling I will run into the same problem again.

btw, MY roomate downloaded the trail version of Nero 7 just now, which is what I have been using since Nero tech told me the program I bought is outdated anyway. He is able to burn dvd's with no issues. He also downloaded Anydvds trial version. I think this confirms there is a problem with my laptops settings

Quote: Well, not sure if you area familiar with Nero's dvd burning process. It gives you 3 choices, burn at once, advance analysis (were it burns the movie on my hard disk first, providing a noticable difference in quality but longer burning time, and slow recording. I have tried all three and get the same code.
yes I am familiar with those chices. And you don't have to do advance analysis to burn to HDD first, that is your choice if you want better quality. Do you always get an error at the same point in the encoding process? You could have a bad Nero installation(the last version of Nro 7 is buggy), or the file you are trying to burn is corrupt. I would go with Nero 6.6.0.18, that is very stable for me. Try burning a different project, use good media and don't put more than 4300Mb on the disc.

ok thanks, I just dont understand why my roomate has not had any problems with it. I hate this because he is not interested in burning dvds anyway but, the program works for him! ANd yes I get the error at the same point everytime! All the media that has failed, burned ok using CloneDVD for watever that's worth.

I saw this in both logs:
Quote: Write speed: 0 KB/s
Something is telling Nero to burn at 0 KB/s which means write at NO data per second.. hmmm thats not good.
Cant come up with an answer right now, check your settings on the burn page and make sure it has some speed listed.
**edit** maybe recode logs look like this. it might not be a problem. Im used to looking at the normal log found here and that one would be good to look at also as it tells me more:
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
These things record all burns, and we only need the last one. The burns are seperated by something like this
Quote: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======
Windows XP 5.1
IA32-xxxx-xxxx-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them.
Quote: VTS_05 Menus Vobs [1 vobus] 0.01MB -> 0.01MB [not compressable]
and those things look like small menus that are not compressable as the size is already small enough so no compression is needed or possible. Just my thoughts on that part..

Thanks! I did noticed my burn logs are not as complete as others postings. Could this be a sign of my problem? All I took out were my key codes. My log files don't include system and other info. I will see if my burn settings are ok. Keep those dianosis' comin please! thanks!!1

You are using the recode log, not the Nero history log. They should be in the path i listed. There is a vision log also, and that one is a pain to read, and doesn't include everything either. Try to find one of the ones i listed and post it. We will be able to see much more of what is going on when you post a regular Nero history log.
Ill be here and so will others on the other side of the planet.. Right gwendolin? :)

ok i just tried to burn The Transporter again and got a more complete log. I have playing with the write speed settings in Nero but nothing seems to make a difference. BTW, I was able to burn a copy of this movie on a borrowed CloneDVD program! Thanks

Now we are getting somewhere. Let me get to one of the main problems that we couldnt see in any of the logs before:
Quote: File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS': Ver=4, 3, 20, 1, size=101504 bytes, created 7/25/2005 11:53:28 AM (InCD4 driver for win NT/2K/XP)

File 'Drivers\InCDrec.SYS': Ver=4, 3, 20, 1, size=8704 bytes, created 7/25/2005 11:53:30 AM (InCD4 driver for win NT/2K/XP)
You have INCD installed on your system and it needs to be COMPLETELY removed using Nero's INCD zapper. This program seems to always conflict with the rest of Nero particularly the DVD part.
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/InCD_CleanTool.html
Now as far as the system aspi goes there is a theory going around that you dont need aspi at all, but i dont think that is true. And you can get Nero to use its own aspi, but that is a temporary fix in my mind.
Installing a system aspi can be hard or easy, and it really falls down to pure luck as to if you get the easy one.
Easy way. Check System ASPI and if corrupt or missing, install the new aspi over it, but i would remove the old aspi first before installing a new one.. And thats the easy one.. :)
However, it can get very difficult and you get to where you have to force aspi to take. Follow the AD guide, then try the ways they list. If it doesnt work, ill link you to force aspi.
Here is the Guide:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm and here is the aspi:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm use the aspi checker first.
It will probably report your system aspi is corrupt or missing..
If that method doesn't work,
use force aspi.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm problem with that method is it uses an older version of aspi, but an older working version is better than any corrupt version.
Good luck. Post back if you have problems..
I also have links to adaptecs home site on my homepage. Just click on my name, and it will take you there. Its under the Links part.
Nero can show you your aspi condition with Info Tools,
You should see something like this on your info tool:

Thanks, that's a lot of info to digest. I wish I could post the pic of my Nero infotool screen in here. My system says in YELLOW ASPI not installed. When I click on Nero it says in GREEN ASPI is installed and working properly. So you really think this is my issue? I dont' know if you remember, but my system did crash and a Dell tech came to my house to replace motherboard and keyboard. My whole problem with Nero started after the crash.
Now, just be sure, I was able to copy the same movie just now with CLone DVD, and I did not do anything with my system ASPI. Clone DVD I guess does not need this to be installed in my laptop?

hello, well it's confirmed I don't has ASPI installed. Nero is however. I called Dell Tech support and they told me I don't need ASPI. I tend to believe them since CloneDVD works perfectly without it. However, may Nero needs it? I will try to install ASPI and if it doesnt work, I will give Nero up and try another program. A week of troubleshooting is too much for me to handle. Thanks for all your help.
