I have a sony external dvd burner. I have burned hundreds of movies, but recently my drive will only rip and burn at a maximum of .4x. My dma is enabled so i am really confused at what might cause this. I use Dvd Decrypter and have never had a problem like this. Could my burner be done for? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

first thing to do is to un install your secondary ide controller then reboot windows your os will reinstall the controller if that does not help check your drive for a firmware upgrade it sound like you need a firmware upgrade go to the web site of the maker of your drive and check for upgrade

This is an external drive, DMA settings are not applicable. Uninstalling the controllers will make no difference. Try and see if you need a fw update.

I updated my firmware, im still not able to get speeds over .4x though. I also tried ripping a movie to my harddrive using the drive in my laptop using dvdd. I was only able to achieve a max speed of .4x with this as well. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Wings13,

Try this link as it has step by step visuals http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/. Sometimes after 6 tries your burner will revert to pio mode even if you reset it. Also as arniebear stated check to see if you have the latest firmware either at http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php or goto the sony website and check under downloads to see if your burner has an update. You can use DVD Decrypter to see what firmware you currently have. Good luck and post back if you still have issues with your burner.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

I have updated the firmware and checked DMA, and the drive continues to rip and burn at no more than .4x. Could the laser possibly be used up? I have only had the burner for a year though.

It is possible that the drive is dead, the only other thing you could try to see if this is what is wrong, is to take it out of the enclosure and put it into a computer as an internal drive.

It's possible to take an external out of its enclosure and use it as an internal drive? Would this require any thing special or would it be just like a normal internal drive?

An external drive is nothing but an internal drive in an enclosure. You take the drive out and hook it up just as you would any other internal drive, using your IDE cable.
