today i just got 2 sticks of 256mb, i already have 1 stick of 512mb in my computer now and it will allow up to 4gb of ram so i put both sticks in and it gives me a beep about ever 3 seconds or so but i can take 1 stick out and it works just fine giving me 768mb of ram so whats the problem???

try each stick by its self in each slot you may have a bad slot or a bad stick somtimes a different order of the moduals makes a difference
is your ram Sd or DDR

philraz, it will be ddr as highly unlikely there is a sdram board that can handle 4gig

no thats not the proplem u proply have four ram slots and ithink tow are blue and two are black or somting like that u only can put to rams or for but not three so ur hop is to buy anthr ram or take away on ram and 100%\ sure

give me the make and model of your board if the slots are in pairs they may be for different speeds of ddr

i played with them switched them around each stick works just fine i just cant have 3 in at a time or it will beep. here is the make and model i have:

Thats why? You have a dual channel board. You can only run pairs or one stick. Ya better hope the pair yeah running is a matched set or your going have instability issues.:>

they are not a matching pair so can i go buy a 512mb to match my 512mb? while i keep my 2 sticks of 256mb in?

No by exact pair I mean same density...same speed...etc....same size....same brand name. They do sell matched pairs, but its not necassary as long as you go by the above rules.

Sorry I missed out on this conversation, but some Gigabyte boards can run Dual Channel mode with 3 sticks of memory.

I called their support, and for my old board, it was slots 1,2 and 4. Not 1,2, and 3 which would be a typical choice.

I had the same prob on my old board, the GA-7N400-L.



It's always a good thing to talk with manufacturer's tech support as well, cuz there just might be exceptions to the rule.
