Hey Everybody,
I just want to start out this post by saying that I give great appreciation to who can help me solve this.
I have been burning DVD movies for almost 6 months now, and I've come a very long way and learned all the tricks of the trade pretty fast. (As opposed to some other Newbies in the forums.) Although, recently I bought some Verbatim 16x DVD+R's from Best Buy. (They were only 15 bucks for 50 spindle; so it was a steal.) and have had more problems than the last media I used. What is happening is that (FYI:I know that anyone who burns at 16x and expects every movie to come out perfect is a fool.) when I burn movies in DVD Shrink with my Verbatims, the only speed they ever burn at is 16x. Now, I have already tried to lower the speed by going in their drop-down menu, but the only available speeds are "Maximum" and "16x (22,160)"; and I was able to burn at 8x no prob with my Sony's before. So, I was wondering how do I change or set specific speed for my burner to write at? (and in this case, my desired speed for my DVD's to burn at is 8x.)

P.S. And yes, I know I was burning at 16x, and I know that makes dvds more susceptible to write errors, but I had no way of stopping it............I kept trying to find a way to burn @ 8x, but I couldnt
>thanx

It's a nice problem to have ... I'm struggling to burn Verbatim 16X (I also bought them at BB for $15!) cause they're "too new".
Anyway, going back to your problem, try this: in explorer, click on th eproperties of the burner.
The last tab should be a "Recording" tab. You should be able to set the recording speed there.

Also, when you say burn with DVDshrink I assume you mean burn with Nero, through DVDshrink.
SO if the above does not work, try save video_ts files with DVDshrink and then burn the DVD through Nero. You should be able to set a different speed there.

I have the exact same problem, I have Nero but its rather new to me so maybe I'm overlooking something..... but I cant reduce the speed either.

Well............one problem there yankeeDDL--when I go to properties, I don't see a "recording" tab. All I see is the tabs, "general, properties, DVD Region, volumes, drivers, details."

Which OS are you using? I have Win XP Pro ver 2002. I believe the same is in Win XP Home.
There may be a different mane but if you have XP you should find a drop-down menu in one of the tabs that lets you set the recording speed (Details, maybe? I don't have it).

Anyway, let us know the OS and consider using Nero to burn rather than DVDShrink: you'll have access to all the options that way.

Although I'm not totally sure what you mean when you say what is your OS; I will tell you that my computer is running on WinXP Home Edition w/ Win. service pack 2. BTW, what do you think of my new sig?

OS, Operating system. Sorry, got used to acronyms at work.
Win XP home edition has probably slightly different menus than XP Pro.
I can't give you exact indication but somewhere in the properties you should be able to set the recording speed.
My suggestion though is still to burn via Nero, in case the above does not work.

If you don't have a blank media in your drive when trying to set the speed, it will burn at maximum speed. Also, when you open Nero Burning Rom, click the burn tab and un-tick "Check for Maximim speed. At least that is what did it for me.
The same applies for Shrink. If you don't have the media in your drive before you start encoding, you can't set the speed rate.
