I've backed-up games for a while perfectly (DQ8, RE4, etc.) using the same dvd type and program, but recently I have noticed my back-ups are become less and less perfect. I've made around 30-40 perfect backups, never having a problem. BUT the last 4-5 games have almost become unplayable because of stuttering, or unable to load sections. So my question is, what happened? I thought it might have been my laser, but all of the old games still play just fine, no hint of problems. I even upgraded my firmware, but it is still acting the same! Any ideas?

are you using the same media, program and burning speed?
If you are then you may want to go out and spend $15 and buy a laser lens cleaner disc. Clean the lens on the PC burner and PS2
My burner started acting funny after a while. I would have a game that i wanted to back up that was a brand new disc, and the burner would not even read it, while others it would read just fine. I used a cleaner disc and now it reads them all just fine.
But audio/video problem are usually due to the media or burning speed most of the time. Even if they are the same brand of DVD, if the manufacturer outsources the production they could have different media codes and actually be different DVD's.

isn't a great idea for ps2. bcoz ppl on this board (including tokijin, sly, jamaal) reckon the lens cleaner does more damage than good to the ps2 laser. it is best to clean it with q-tip or alcohol with a cotton wad.

about the laser in the dvd writer, i think a lens cleaner disc should be good. i used it on my old cd-writer and it started working fine.

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Last but not least you can use DVD Info Pro: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I've cleaned my ps2 laser recently, and it didn't help with anything. Like I said, it plays all of my other ps2 backup games just fine, so I don't think its the ps2. The media I am using is Memorex DVD-R and they have served me fine for xbox and ps2 backups for a year now... so I am thinking it might be my dvd rom on my computer...? If so, I guess Ill try a cleaner.

The Pioneer 110D is a solid drive. I think on that model, the official Pioneer firmware (finally) supports booktyping/bitsetting. This is definitely a media problem. Chuck the Memosux in favor of some Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's.

86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com
Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place is to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

Then you have been REALLY lucky. More than half the people posting here with game problems are because they are using memorex media. Get some better media as listed in tokijin's post.

V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

no problem man. I only suggest that because some noobs do more harm than good when they try opening up their PS2 to clean or adjust the laser :)
Next thing you know they have disconnected ribbons and such.
the one i bought was made for game consoles so i doubt it would damage them. The company would just get a lot of law suits if it did.

And i would have to agree with the above, get rid of the Memorex.
They are one of the very worst DVD's you could choose.
They could potentialy harm your laser in the long run.
Switch up to a better brand and i would get an 8X DVD-R
