you have InCd installed, go to nero website and download InCd Cleaning tool and uninstall InCd. That conflicts with Nero and you get burning errors.
Your firmware update is indeed JWS6:
http://www.memorex.com/downloads/software/JWS6.zip. That maybe will fix media incompatibility, as it seems your drive does not like it.

I would get some TY, Verbatims or Maxell-Fuji-Sony MIJ discs. After upadating the firmware, Ritek could also work.
When you say your computer freezes when trying to update, do you have any other programs runing? Make sure you have no media in your drive. Close any other applications. Some recommend doing it in "Safe Mode".

Turn this option off - as you can tell this option gives you a higher chance of coasters! Nero will save to a temp file then delete it when done.

New addict, or I just seen it now? Congrat!
I looked twice for that Burn on the fly, and twice I missed it,after your post:)!
@1lonewolf
When you download your firmware update, you should get a Zip file.Extract that to your desktop. The new folder made should have a little application named JWS6, and underneath it says XFlash. After you closed ALL applications and removed any media from your drive, double click that application. It will take a while for it to scan your drive.

You burned the .iso file right? Shouldn't make a diff - just open the disc image and pick the iso file and burn.
Can you post this Nero log?

I'm at a loss - it looks like the disc was finalized. I just compared an iso burn of mine to yours and am not seeing anything out of whack - well to me anyhow.
If the disc was finalized (all -/+ r's should be) Nero Info tool would not show it as open - not finalized - disc status does even appear on ones finalized. Burning an iso wouldn't make the disc not finalize.
The only thing I can think of is you have multisession clicked instead of no multi session.

It is a great site isn't it!
Now if your off to buy more media like us make some suggestion!
From cyprusrom:
Quote: I would get some TY, Verbatims or Maxell-Fuji-Sony MIJ discs.
Ritek has given me problems - others here love it. I mainly use Taiyo Yuden - I buy it from http://supermediastore.com Post back on how it turns out!
Now those coasters - ebay it is!! With some of the stuff sold on there I don't see why you can't get top $ for em :0)

@1lonewolf,
Memorex doesn't make DVD media(maybe they had, I don't know). But like you said, youre stuck on Ritek- so Ritek makes the discs, Memorex sells them. And I think Ritek is actually rare nowdays to be branded Memorex. I don't know, but Memorex discs are made mostly by an (in)famous corporation aka CMC Mag. The worse media you can by. Don't you think is normal for a vendor to advertize their name, no matter on what product is branded? So, don't listen to what they say,buy the good stuff!
I personally use Ritek. I use Maxell DVD+R X8 made by Ritek. So far I had success. I found mine really, really cheap,otherwise i have Verbatims and Sony MIJ, but, with second class, budget media, is a hit and miss, it is very burner and technique specific. Some people here will tell you they had great succes with Ritek. And again Ritek comes in many flavours,some better than others. Yours might be some "failure-to-thrive" Ritek. Maybe just because they were branded "Memorex:~)!
