How do I remove hiss from a WAV file?

Hi there. I have a great WAV recording from Genesis's "The Cinema Show" of 1973. Unfortunately, it has a hiss on it. Can anyone tell me how to remove the hissing, without lowering the audio quality. Maybe there is some sort of filtering?
All tips will be appreciated. Thanks you!

SonicFoundry's Noise Reduction DirectX plugin has worked miracles for my old casette recordings with a lot of hiss on them.

Audacity is a freeware program which has noise removal - I haven't tried it, so give it a whirl and tell us was it good?

I have tried Audacity. The noise reduction works but leaves the WAV with a sort of "metallic" sound - not so nice. I tried adjusting the level of noise reduction; less seems to be better. STill the result doesn't make me happy...

Sonic Foundry then. First of all, it is a very very hard program to obtain. I downloaded the trial software from the official site. Then I downloaded the nloise reduction plug-in and made some tries... this is difficult! It is really trial-and-error... I have no idea of the effects of adjusting the parameters. Sonic seems to be more sophisticated tha Audacity... it's just that I don't have a clue of what I'm doing!
Tips, anyone? I really could use some help from you whizzkids here!

Also, is there a working serialnumber for Sonic Foundry out there? I searched the internet, but none seem to work and the program stops working in a few days!

Exchanging serials on the forum will get you banned. Read the forum rules.

Off the top of my head, this is what you do with the NR plugin:

1. First, you select the region of audio which is only noise. Usually the beginning of an analog recording.

2. Check the 'fingerprint' box, and set 'mode' to 'mode 3' (or whatever was the highest. You get less metalic the higher this setting is). I also set the 'fourier something' parameter as high as it goes.

3. Then press [preview]. This takes a fingerprint of the noise.

4. Set the amount of noise reduction applied until you get the desired result.

That's about it. If you do this kinda thing alot, it's probably worth the $$$s. I did my entire analog casettes/vinyl using this proggie.

Thanks! I've tried this and I must say, it works great! The only problem is, when I have the file sounding just right, I discover that the trial version of Sonic doesn't give me the possibility to save the file that I worked on...... I tried copying the whole file and pasting it in another audio editor like Cool Edit, but this doesn't seem to work either.

So, here I am, with a really good sounding file that I'm really happy with, and now I cannot save it! That is why I asked for a working serial. Of course I know that the forum was not invented for exchanging serials, but the trial version does help me...

What to do now? Help me, anyone? (maybe send me a serial in a private message? or will this get me banned? :-) )

All help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Exchanging serials in the pm will also get you, and whoever sends you the serial banned. Do that stuff somewhere else, not in our forums.
