Hey mlane, lets see if I can get you burning again.
Remove the serial# in your post.

Here:
*********************************************************************
Nero Version: 6.6.0.16
*********************************************************************
Your version of nero is out of date, update to version 6.6.0.18 it's stable and works well.

get the updates here:
http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

Here:
*********************************************************************
CdRomPeripheral : Lite-On LTN486S 48x Max atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
*********************************************************************
This device is set most likely for the slower PIO mode, set to the faster DMA mode. Here's a guide:
http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm

Here:
********************************************************************
Recorder: <HP DVD Writer 740b> Version: FF24 - HA 1 TA 1 - 6.6.0.16
********************************************************************
I was unable to find any info on this drive, so was unable to determine if a firmware update was required.

Here:
*********************************************************************
Physical memory : 254MB (260096kB)
Free physical memory: 78MB (79940kB)
Memory in use : 69 %
*********************************************************************
Your PC's physical memory is pretty low, you should have at least 512MB. Very little of it is left while burning so try not to multitask and turn off any applications running in the backround while burning to conserve/free up memory.

Here:
*********************************************************************
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
*********************************************************************
Your file sizes are a bit large , have shrink or nero recode create smaller file sizes so as not to burn too close to the outer edge of the disk which is a no no. Try a custom size of 4300MB.

Here:
*********************************************************************
Recorder: HP DVD Writer 740b, Media type: DVD+R
Disc Manufacturer ID: RICOHJPN, Media Type ID: R03, Product revision number: 4

AND

Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
*********************************************************************
This indicates that the drive maybe unhappy with your choice of media or write speed, a firmware update would of possibly resolved this, but since one couldn't be located, try another brand of media like verbatims or SONY DVD+Rs made in japan.

Here:
*********************************************************************
5:59:37 PM #27 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832
Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
*********************************************************************
Burning at 16x is way too fast, slow it down to 4x and go no faster than 8x to cut down on burn failures.

@mlane
Welcome to aD!
First thing I would is edit your post and remove the serial number - it begins w/ 1A - don't want someone getting that!
Not too much wrong here so let's start w/ this:
Quote:
Lite-On LTN486S 48x Max atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Turn this drive's dma back on. Here's a guide:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf
Quote:
Physical memory : 254MB
Free physical memory: 78MB
Not a lot of ram to beging so free up as much as possible - no multi tasking and shut doen any unnecessary processes. Try & add another 256 mb.
Quote:
Disc Manufacturer ID: RICOHJPN & Burn process failed at 16x
Good media but your burning to fast and this can be causing your failures - cut it back to 8x.
Your hp writer may need a firmware update but I can't find this drive in my usually haunts - you may need to contact hp.
Free up some memory and reduce the burn speed and try again!

"I should be able to make a backup of all my movies correct?"

What application are you using to rip/decrypt your DVDs?

EDIT: Hey Binkie7, how goes the battle?

I am using DVD Shrink

DVDshrink alone won't be able to handle the new copy protection placed on some of the new movie releases since it's no longer being updated. The easiest thing to do is to use dvdshrink in conjunction with Anydvd to crack the copy protection that shrink alone can't. Anydvd is a driver that runs in the backround making DVDs appear unencrypted and easy to backup using shrink or nero recode 2, it comes with a 21 day free trial before you must purchase. You can get it here:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

It's worth the money and makes backing up a breeze.

You can also try free application like DVDdecrypter or DVDFab Decrypter. Get them here:

DVDFab decrypter
