I was wondering what precisely is watermarking and is there a way around it (i.e. re-encode, decompress to .wav and encode back to mp3)???

n00b here... Thanx

unlike wma and apple audio files, mp3s do not and cannot contain DRM (copy-protection). The only watermarked mp3s you might find floating around p2p sites are ones that record companies intentionally put out that are garbage and not the actual song.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Well different mp3 download sites like Beatport, AudioJelly, Traxsource are doing this with their mp3s. Though AJ doesn't do this as of yet, Beatport is going to, Traxsource does and so does somebody else that I forgot.

[qoute]"This email is to inform you that Traxsource Security measures have detected suspicious and / or illegal activity from you. Your account has been suspended and your credit card number and name have been blacklisted and banned from further purchases pending a thorough investigation. If it is found that you have violated the file sharing or any other clause of the Traxsource Terms Of Service Agreement that you agreed to at time of purchase, further action will be taken."
This was sent to a member of a music community. I hear it's written in the binary code of the file. So I'm just tryin' to see if this is BS or really true.

so whatever this traxsource is, they have supposedly caught you illegally downloading files off p2p, but I don't see what that has to do with "watermarked mp3s", unless you are trying to say that this company tracked you because of an mp3. if that is the case, then you have been caught because this company or whoever was observing your activity by accessing your IP address, which is how the RIAA and MPAA is able to track p2p users and sue them, and has nothing to do with the actual mp3s you download...

I hear ya but I'm not the one being harassed. Don't know who but supposedly it was by seeing the mp3 shared (possibly by p2p - idiot person) to many times and they contacted the original buyer of the track 'cause his info was watermarked on the mp3. That was what I was referring to. Maybe there is more to this than was shared with the person who I obtained the qoute/letter from.

So basically watermarking isn't possible. Hmmm

Thanx
