Hi, I just bought a $1,300 Gateway with some HL-DT-ST GDR 8164 DVD burner in it. I got Nero 6 OEM and I downloaded some $24.99 mpeg de/encoder. I went to a filesharing site, downloaded "The Search for the Holy Grail" and tried to burn a DVD of it. Didn't work. Gave me two coasters and said "Burn process finished". The whole process took over 25 minutes each time and didn't work. I'm p@ssed. The movie is an avi file, I think.
One of the main reasons for buying a new computer was to burn DVDs of clips of my newborn son and I can't. I can't even find the clips when trying to burn. Can anyone help? Please?
Thanks in advance,
KC

First of all you need to upgrade your OEM version of nero6 to version 6.6.0.18, click on the link to get it, you can install it over the version you already have.
http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe
Second, you can't just burn .avi files to disk and expect them to play in a stand alone player. What you need to do is convert the files to a DVD compliant format, normally I would suggest nero to do this, but I suspect the OEM version you have will not. What you need to perform the conversion with is a free program called avi2dvd, click on the link to get it as well as a guide on how to do it. There is also a guide provided for converting the files to an ISO image format and burning to disk using DVD decrypter.

If you wish to learn how to use nero to burn the files to disk with follow the guide from the provided link.
NOTE: The guide is for burning video files located in a VIDEO_TS folder, nero can also be used to burn ISO images.

Thanks alot for the help. I tried to download the Nero update and it wouldn't let me saying that I Windows Media Player or one of it's pug-ins needs to be closed in order to update it. To my knowledge, WMP is closed. I don't have it running anywhere. Now what?
Thanks again,
KC

Before uninstalling Nero from your system, reboot the computer and try again.

OK, I got the upgrade downloaded.
I downloaded the AVI2DVD software and it is giving me an error message when I try to convert. I checked their help forums and saw that others have had the same problem.
Waiting to see their replies.
Thanks alot!

There is a very good guide in my sig, by alkohol.
You might like to post a log file so we can take a look.
Log files are found here Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
