I want to create some MP3 and would welcome some info on what settings to use for bitrate and sampling.

This must be an old recurring question but nealry all the answering I find are very evasive! :-)

My MP3 will be made from WAVs of mono tape recordings which were made on an old-style analog dictation machine. The quality of the machine is no better than "AM radio".

All the recordings are of speech. (a) Sometimes the speech was recorded by a mic in a room. (b) Sometimes the speech is a phone call recorded from the phone socket.

What MP3 settings should I use?

Do you recommend that I use a specific codec? LAME?

Can I use a general codec (like the one included in Audacity) and still get good results?
