I've had an emachine for 2 months. Windows XP. Athlon 3200. 2 GHRZ. 512 DDR memory. I've decrypted a dozen or so DVD's with it. It ran fine.

Last week, it slowed down considerably when I used DVD decrypter. It now runs at about 1x. I noticed that cpu usage was 100%.

I tried other DVD's. Same 100%.

On my wife's older computer, the same operation was under 10%.

I checked the IDE Channels. All have "DMA if available" invoked.

I opened dvd43 and used Windows Copy to copy a track. Same 100%.

I did a virus scan (Norton) and a spyware scan (Windows Spyware.) Nothing.

I installed a new dvd drive. Same 100%.

I'm out of ideas. Can anyone suggest something else I might try?

I try not to be paranoid, but maybe one of the DVD's I copied had some "we'll fix them" code that messed up some setting on my computer. Anyone have a similar experience and a similar suspicion?

run msconfig from the sart menu and shut down some odd start-up programs that run in the background of the computer. This might help find out what the program is.run hijack this it's a freeware program on the internet to remove unwanted programs hidden in the regisrty of the computer. Also run ccleaner also called crap cleaner (freeware) www.ccleaner.com remove all activeX files.Check recentley installed programs for spyware uninstall/reinstall.

Is it crap or is it memorex?

Thanks. I'll try it.

I have 3 IDE Channels and one of the secondary channels shows a current transfer mode of PIO only. Does anyone know how I can find out which channel connects to the DVD drive? Maybe that secondary channel is the problem?

It's great to see that people are trying to help. I'm new to this forum, and I'll be happy to help anyone who has a problem that I think I can help solve.

Here is a guide for checking and changing PIO to DMA

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

Your drives do need to be on DMA otherwise you will have slow transfer.

Edit if you have Nero use the Nero InfoTool and it will give the information on your drive configuration.

Thank you arniebear. Between the possiblity of spyware and the wrong setting of the IDE Channel, I should be able to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks to everyone. It's OK now. Uninstalling the driver for the secondary channel did the trick.

I never would have had the nerve to uninstall a driver without being told that I could get away with it.

Thanks again for everyone for your help. I'll try to be as useful to someone else if I find one that I can help with.
