Hi there

OS: XP Pro SP2. Nero 6.6

P4 3.0, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD = 80GB HDD, LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-16373S (slave to theHDD on the primary IDE slot)

A few months back, I was backing up movies on DVD-R at about 45 minutes a pop. Then visited AfterDawn to pick up a few tips. Flashed the DVD player with the latest firmware, and installed the latest Nero updates. Hey presto... burn now down to 8 minutes!

Yesterday, it's back up to 45 minutes again.
So reflashed the DVD player (though the firmware has not been upgraded since last time). And installed the lasteds Nero.

A couple of points, checking the DVD player spec in Nero I see that DMA is off

However, going in Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLER

There are two PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL boxes listed.

1.

Device 0
Transfer Mode DMA if applicable
Current Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 5

Device 1
DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode not applicable

2.

Device 0
DMA if available
Transfer Mode Ultra DMA2

Device 1
Transfer Mode DSMA id available
Current Transfer Mode PIO (grayed)

I haven't made any other changes to the system prior to the slow down of burn except the day before I installed the Windows Powertool SyncToy. I have now uninstalled it.

Also I noted that Nero is using 300 MB of memory during the burn.

Anyone think that maybe doing a system restore would help?

And any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

Philraz... Thanks for the useful tip. I'll keep that filed for future reference. I managed to solve the problem by using XP's handy restore point facility.

Even though removing the only software I had installed prior to the problem stil did not enable the DMA, taking the system back to the day before did. A bit unsatisfactory but it worked!!

Weird huh?
