OK, I have a really nice and new Yamaha 7.1 receiver (with plenty of optical and component inputs), some great Sony Speakers, a 30" flat Samsung HDTV...a really nice home theater setup...except my DVD player is a total P.O.S.

I tossed "Saving Private Ryan" into my 360 and was quite impressed with the picture and sound...much better than my dvd player.

Anyone else watch dvd's with their 360??? If so, what do you think???

the 360 outputs dvd's at 480p so it is basically a Progressive scan dvd player. even if your display is hd capable (720p or 1080i) the dvd picture from the 360 can't go beyond 480p. i still prefer my upconverting dvd player over the 360. i have an Oppo OPDV971H outputting a very good 1080i picture to my samsung dlp. my friend has a samsung DVD-HD950 also putting out a 1080i picture and he says his 360 is a POS when it comes to playing DVD's.

I agree with dblbogey. The 360 does not measure up to other upconverting dvd players especially on a high def display. I have the same Oppo DVD player and it blows the 360 away when it comes to DVD playback on my HDTV.

The 360 will have upscale converting when the DVI cable is realesed.
(BTW in Britain you get 576P instead of 480P because it's PAL, woohoo)

Thanks for all the info...

What's the deal with the DVI cable?? What is it?? How much will it cost?? Any ideas?? I've just dropped like $1200 on home entertainment over the past month, so I really need to pay off my credit card before I go buying any more toys.

Basically there is some stupid rule that says you need HDCP protection in order to have high-def DVD(nothing technical, just a stupid rule someone made up) and microsoft being pussies obey this rule. HDCP is something which is only found in digital ports (DVI/HDMI)not analoge ports (conponent/VGA) and even then you have to check that your TVs DVI port supports HDCP(some dont) but since yours is expensie it almost certanily will. The DVI cable is not out yet but it has been confirmed(no realese date given) also the HD-DVD add on has been confirmed.
