So I got some complimentary DVD-9 blanks from an on-line store. The other media (CD-R and DVD-5) work fine in my Pioneer A04.

But I can't write to the DVD-9's. Primo Prassi keeps telling me that the data I'm trying to write exceeds the capacity of the disk - and that just isn't true...

My Primo Prassi is set to read the max size from the media...

Anyone have similar problems?

OK - I'm not that well-versed in these things.

The dual-sided DVD I got has 4.7G on each side.
How does one make use of this? Do I have to split up a movie and write the halves on each side ?

Doom9, as usual, has an excellent guide for splitting real DVD-9 to two-sided DVD-5.

OK - what I have from CD-rcordable.com is actually NOT a DVD-9 - it's only a single-layered, dual-sided DVD.

Is there such a thing as recordable DVD-9 ???

Meaning dual-layered, single-sided DVD-R with 8.xx G capacity such that I don't have to split up my movies that don't fit onto a 4.7G side ?

No. Tech companies say at the moment that it is technically impossible to manufacture, since DVD players recognize blank DVDs in way that uses the dual layer/single layer functionality to cheat the players to think the DVD as a "real" DVD disc.
