Hi all. I have been using Avi2Dvd for ages without any problems. Except for 1 file.
I am trying to encode an avi file to vcd. At the muxing stage the audio scans through, but no video. The end result is the file plays the video for about 1-2 seconds, then freezes, while the audio continues as normal.
I've tried encoding the same file to dvd, and also tried the different encoders in the program. All with the same result. The file itself plays perfectly on WMP9 and DivX player.
I have windows xp home. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks in advance.

I cannot explain the freeze, maybe this AVI had AC3 audio, but you can do this.
I suppose you encoded AVI -> M1V (or mpeg with few seconds?)
Anyway, provided the video has been fully encoded, you could do this
1) load the AVI with VirtualDub. (do on File__File information. I hope the audio is MP3, not AC3). Set Audio ___ Full processing mode.
Do File___Save WAV.
2) Open headAC3he. Load the WAV. Select destination format : MP2. Start...
3) Open TMPGenc 2.5 (which is free, for MPEG-1 VCD files). Select File__MPEG Tools___Multiplex. Video: the M1V/the MPG; audio: the MP2
Set type: MPEG-1 Video-CD. Run.
If the audio was AC3, you have to change a little the procedure above mentioned.
First, open the AVI with VirtualDubMod, not with VirtualDub. Do Stream___Stream List_Demux (you'll demux the AC3 stream. VirtualDub names every file WAV and cannot be used because it cannot decompress AC3 streams). Then HeadAC3he. As before, encode in MP2 format, but you'll have to check the box 'resample to 44.1 kHz because Ac3 is DVD compliant 48 kHz, (S)VCD are 44.1 kHz. After converting
48kHz AC3 -> 44.1 kHz MP2 , do the same you should have done before, to multiplex video and audio.

Thanks for your detailed reply aldaco. I dont have VirtualDub, so will have to download that tomorrow (its getting late here).
I did a 'defacto' run through of the problem file again just to confirm that it was mp3 audio.
You also mentioned "provided the video has been fully encoded". This is where my problem lies, as its not being encoded at all. At the muxing stage the audio scans through, then the video/audio demuxing, but totally skipped scanning the video.
The muxed file ready for burning only has about 1-2 seconds of video, then freeze frames (like the picture was paused). I will give the VirtualDub a try and let you know. Thanks again.

Just to make a test, remove the audio (open with VirtualDub. Set vide_direct stream copy, audio__No audio and save (F7) to movie_mute.avi.
If your program manages to encode the video part, you're OK. Just convert the AVI audio into MP2, then multiplex it to the video.
If your program cannot encode the video, scan it with a Video fixer (there are many available, I used the one located in http://www.fixvideo.com/). That AVI might be corrupt, and you need to try to fix it.

But what are, the characteristics of that 'muxed file' (duration and so on..)?

I opened VirtualDub and when I selected 'file', only 7 options were available. All the others were greyed out including 'file information'. I then tried 'open video file' from the same menu and was informed that access was denied to My documents. So bit of a dead end there.
I dont know whether its relavent or not, but during the set-up of the program, I was told that I have AngelPotion Definitive codec installed.
I also tried scanning with video fixer, then tried encoding it again but the end result was the same.
File duration - 43.25 (95Kbps)
Muxed file (mpeg) 442,647 KB
Audio stream 1 MP3 2CH.mp2 71,232 KB
Not sure if that was the info you requested, Im new at this stuff when it doesn't work as planned, lol but trying to learn. Thanks again
