I'm just now checking out this program, and I can't tell from the faq what kinds of benefits it has over DVD Shrink. At least, all I see is the menus functionality.

you soon will see when members read what you want to know about this program. It's the best qualtiy video program you can get out there on the market today! DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE will give you high quality backups that Shrink just can't produce! Quote: webhedreg 31 July 2005 13:42 for DVD-Rebuilder v0.93
Why Oh Why did I put off trying this software for so long.
Don't be put off by thinking it is difficult to use, it's not. It is extremely easy to use, and the quality of the backups is outstanding. Using pro version. Takes about 90 Minutes to back up a dual layer DVD such as Simpsons series 5 disk 1 from 6.9GB to 4.3 GB, but again results are great. Although I would always recommend Shrink, I will not be going back to it from now on.
and that's an older version! wait... here's more: Quote: When combined with any version of CCE, the software produces far better video quality than any of the fast one-click tools.Quote: and I can dig out more from many members that love this program! I donate very six months or so it's that good!

eatcarrot - read my recent thread here
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/310756
that should answer your question....
dvd-rb is the best right now in terms of quality... it's almost as easy as using dvdshrink, and only takes a bit longer....if quality is what you want then this is it, bar none.

I just jumped on the band wagon and downloaded DVD Rebuilder with CCE and did a copy of Survivour Season7 Disc 5 and it took 361 MIN to backup. I set it to do 3 passes. Would this be the reason? If not any sugestions on how to get it to do the processes in 90 minutes like stated above?
I have 1GB of memeory and use a P4 3.20Ghz CPU

larrylje - thats cause CCE does a re-encode of the mpeg2 files, so it takes longer... shrink just rips out half of the data straight across the board, CCE analyzes every frame to see where the most data is needed and where the least needs to be and encodes the file based on that to give the best quality, shrink just removes half the data on everything.... seems like a little bit longer than it should be, but may be normal for that cpu... try 2 pass and see what the quality is like compared to the 3, should be like 1/3rd faster and even at ONE pass it will blow away dvdshrink

Definitely. I used to use DVD Shrink, but now-a-days, I only used Nero Recode 2 with "AA + HQSR" (for any movies that needed 40% or lower compressions) and DVD Rebuilder Pro + CCE SP (for any movies that needed 40% - 50% or higher compressions).

I guess I just don't understand. I've used DVDShrink for over a year, and at least on my television, I cannot see a difference between the original and the rip. Granted, it's just a regular 32' screen, but even when I put two movies on one dvd at 60% compression, it looks great to me.
It's not that I doubt that DVD Rebuilder is any good, it's just why change if Shrink works so well? Maybe for newer dual-sided discs use Rebuilder but for older single discs stick with shrink?

use what's good for you! If you like the quality... so be it! But years down the road you might change to that large screen tv that you always wanted and what's gonna happen if those DVDs that looked great in your 32" now isn't as great for that new modern 80" plazma,LCD, Gamma Damma Doooooo in 2036!!!hahahahahahahah we should live soooooo long! eatcarrot - if it works for you then stick with it, you re right....on a regular tv you would be hard pressed to tell the difference, even up close... but eventually you will get a better tv then say to yourself "oh man, thats terrible....i wasted all that time using dvdshrink and i have to do all my dvd's over now" it's just a matter of time... dvdrebuilder is just as easy as dvdshrink, it just takes a bit longer... if top quality isn't what you are looking for then shrink kicks it's ass hard when it comes to speed.

I concur with the others that on a normal 25" - 32" tv you probably won't notice that much difference between a backup made with shrink and one made with rb/cce on folders requiring 25% compression or less but you will notice a difference on big screen hdtv's especially on folders requiring more than 25% compression.
By the time you set up DVD Shrink to achieve its maximum video quality potential (advanced analysis and hqaec set at max smooth) rb/cce doesn't take that much longer and is well worth the little extra time it does take.
larrylje,
Try rb/cce at 2 passes. I can't really notice a difference between 2 passes and 3 passes and 2 passes will shave off about 1/3 of the time. Your time set at 3 passes is about right depending on how big the folder was. My average times are about 2 - 2 1/2 hrs at 2 passes on a 6.5 gb folder. My cpu doesn't have hyperthreading and is only 533 fsb (ordered the wrong cpu when I was building my pc).

These guys are 100% correct. When I first got my new HDTV, I couldn't believe how bad some of the brodcast channels were. Even the ones that are digital, some of them looked really bad. Same goes for a poorly compressed movie.
Shovels Rule!

Thanks for the reply Mort. I am getting the hang of it and orded some good Taiyo Yuden DVD's. I finaly got tired of watching a disc and close to the end have the movie it would skip and pixilate. So I am going to get serious about it. I actully only paid $50 for 200 of Taiyo Yuden (TYG02) so that was about the same price I was paying for the cheaper DVD's I was using. ANyway hope all goes good now am looking forword to have better quility backups.

Why are you guys comparing a $2000 product (DVD-RB w/CCE) with DVD Shrink (freeware) though?

dvd-rb with any free encoder (comes with a couple) is heads and tails above dvd-shrink, they shouldn't really be compared though because while they do achieve the same objective they do it vastly differently.... also why we don't compare bicycles to ferrari enzos, they both get you to work but in vastly different ways.

If the disc's compression is at or above 85% quality,then...
On my Panasonic HDTV 50", there is no quality difference staring at the screen up close (6"), between the two programs.
If it goes below 85%, you can pick up a deterioration in picture using shrink compared to DVD Rebuilder & CCE SP.
I tend to only rip and back up the main movie, DVD Shrink is lightning fast compared to DVD Rebuilder CCE SP combo,
with as good a visual quality.
........as I said, as long as the back ups are on or over 85%. quality.

yeah, 99% of my backups are movie only and usually no less than 80% ratio using DVD Shrink, and the backups look good on my 65 inch mits HD running 480p through component hookups.
