I currently use Nero Recode & Clone DVD 2.

I always set my target size to DVD5 (4.7 MB)
for regular Single Layer Media.( -R )

If I can customize target size, what should I set it at ??

I've seen other members say they set it to something else, as not to write too close to the edge of disk.

Is this correct ?

I'm not sure but, I think I saw some users say something about setting target to 4.4 MB ?

Personally, I set the target size to 4300mb which keeps the burned data far enough from the edge where I don't run into read errors when using B Class media.

I customized all of my backups anywhere from 4400MB - 4460MB and I have never experienced any playback issues whatsoever. However, I only used genuine media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "advanced azo or datalife plus" and Hitachi Maxell (made in japan).

I usually set my size to 4384 and I use Taiyo Yuden exclusively! But, now that I know that Alcohol has never had a problem with setting it to 4400-4460 then I might just do that, since I'm using the same discs!

4500MB? Don't know, never tried it, that's way too close to the edge (and or is already at the edge). But like I said, I've always done mine in 4400MB - 4460MB (lately for 4460) and I've never experienced any playback issues.

@dabig25

You're welcome mate. With 4460MB and you're using authentic Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "advanced azo" or Hitachi's Maxell (MIJ) media, you won't have any problems at all. According to my knowledge, I strongly believe that any DVD+R is capable of holding 4482MB, but I would never dare to customize mine to 4482MB.

Below is a successful burned log taken from mine with 4461MB (actually it's 4460MB, but Nero showed 4461MB). I recently burned that earlier yesterday. The movie is DOMINO, god damn.. Keira Knightley is good in that movie. I've tested and it played flawlessly without no glitches whatsoever. Did I mentioned that I used Nero Recode 2 with "AA + HQSR" plus "Assign best quality to the Main Movie". Yes, and the quality is great, even with my 55" Widescreen SONY HDTV. I was going to use DVD Rebuilder Pro + CCE SP, but I'm lazy this time. I only use DVD Rebuilder Pro + CCE SP like 10% and Nero Recode 2 like 90% for all of my backups.

had too many problems with crappy discs so i stick at 4300MB, even though i only use top notch media now. am now ploughing thru a couple hundred of bad discs that need reburning and some of them are at the default 4465mb or whatever, but even the 4300mb majority of them are no good, bloody crappy media. ah well only the good stuff gets used now

dabig25,

personally I prefer verbatim's printable surface over ty's. hub printable verbatim's is all I use anymore and I never have any playback issues. also I can find the verbatim DVD+R hub printables for a little less than the ty DVD+R hub printables.

I primarily use rb/cce for all my backups which has a default target size of about 4432 mb but if I use a different transcoding proggy like shrink, dvdclone, or Nero recode I set the target size to 4430 mb then again I only use grade A media.

Yeah, I've heard that Verb's printable surface is better, than TY's.

I'm leaning toward Verb's, always have much success w/ them.

Never have used printable disc before though.

& there also cheaper than TY's.

I see you are asking about setting the target size using Nero recode,which I recommended to you in another thread for you.

Lorenzo wants to know how to change that target size using Nero vision express.

I'd like to help you both,but I haven't used those programs. Maybe someone will actually answer the original question as well as lorenzo's question?

Anybody have any info on reducing the targets in those programs/

Here's something I came across. It for nerorecode2: There's a box thast says fit to target size-leave unticked.It should open up a window that says custom. You probably have to go through custom and enter 4360 mbs or something like that?

@laurenzo & gwendolin

In query to Nero Vision Express 3 or Nero Vision 4, once you've set/clicked on the "make DVD" tab, it "automatically" set to default 4300MB already.

This probably isn't the right way but when I use NVE (which isn't very often) and exceed the target size, I just save it to a hdd folder and then run it back through recode 2 or similiar. The quality in my experience of avi's isn't very good anyway so I figure it won't hurt to run it through a transcoder to make it fit on a DVD5.
