TOday, I just went out and bought a pack of Memorex DVD-R's, brand new from Fry's. I ripped the DVD's to the hard drive using dvd fab decryptor. After that, I used DVD Shrink to burn them, however I got a message when it started to burn saying about an illegal disc error. I went back to Fry's and bought Fujifilm. That still doesn't work, so I upgraded my Firmware and it still came up with the same message. The weird part about this is that I can use my old Memorex DVD-R's and they work perfect, however, my new Fuiji and Memorex DVD-R's don't work at all. What Blank DVD's can I buy so I can start burning movies or should I replace my DVD Burner, its a Memorex DVD+/-DRLWL1 F16
Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the best media out there according to most of the senior members at AfterDawn. I have found this to be true as well. Sony, and Maxell are also exellent media if they are made in Japan. Some are and some aren't, but don't bother buying the ones that are not made in Japan. The high quality discs are not any more expensive than the crappy ones and they will save you lots of headaches when trying to burn. Here is a thread that explains DVD media and which are good/bad.

I use Taiyo Yuden almost exclusively - throwing in some verbs from time to time - no burning problems. As FiremanDB said these 2 brands are highly recommended by aD members along with look for made in japan. It was thru trial and error and pre my aD days that I started using these brands.
For the discs that you currently have try reducing the burn speed. You can also post your Nero log to see if something else is going on. They can be found here:
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
The logs are seperated by something like this
*** NeroAPI, History File *** ======
Just be sure to edit out your serial though!
I went out and bought Verbatim DVD-R disks and I even installed WIndows XP again. I even opened ASPI files to my Memorex DVD Burner. After I did all that, a new message comes up from DVD Shrink and from Nero saying that burning has failed. That's all, it says, it doesn't say anything about illegal disk errors anymore. Is it my burner that isn't working.

Which version of Nero are you using? If using 6.6.1.4 shrink will not autoburn w/ nero - this latest update broke that connection. You'll receive a TRF error. If that's the case go back a version to 6.6.0.18.

Yes Binkie7 is right. You need to post the Nero burn log so we can see exactly what is going on. You can find the log by going here: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt. Copy and paste the latest burn log and don't forget to edit out your serial number.

This is precisely the dilemma that I've always had with the DVD burning industry...compatibility. For a couple of years I used GreatAzo blank DVD's, which are made by Ritek (at first I used DVD-R then switched to DVD+R when it suddenly stopped recognizing the -R's),with a 100% success rate on my Sony DRU-510A. When I purchased my Memorex 16X DL burner, I also purchased 300 blanks DVD's only to discover that they were incompatible with the burner. I ended up returning the blanks for a refund but before I did, I purchased a few single blank DVD's just to make sure that it wasn't the drive itself. The Memorex blanks worked like a charm and I've had a 100 success rate with them as well.
As the others have said, the Professional grade blanks seem to have a much better success rate (near perfect) than the generic brands. If you want to try generic blanks, I would suggest you purchase a Sampler pack from someplace like Meritline to test and maybe a few singles of the Professional Grade Media before you assume that the burner is the source of your trouble. Or, just buy some Professional Grade blanks and give them a shot.
