Hello, recently I started backing up my collection of Degrassi Jr. High, it is distributed by WGBH Boston and this is what happened..

On season 1 (3 discs) disc 1 and 2 were copied without any problems using dvd shrink, but disc 3 stoped right at the middle (each discs contains 4 episodes) so, right at the begining of episode 3 shrink gave me the error message, I went turned anydvd on, anydvd didn't find any protection, or structure protection, but again, it stoped at the same spot, i tried backing up with dvdclone (and anydvd), read error at 50% so I tried dvd decrypter with file mode, and again at 50% it gave me a read error with an 'illegal mode for this track' message, so i thought my cd' must've gotten scratched or something, but no, is brand new! I even went to my sister's to askher for her copy and the same thing happened, so I went to my dvd player, and it played with no problems, I then used it in my computer using power dvd, and there it was, a message saying 'this dvd might have been damaged to the point of not being able to play' or something along those lines, so the player will play it with no problems, but the computer won't, every application will reject it in the computer, I then used fab decrypter and voila! it transfered the files to my hard drive, and was able to use shrink then.. only problem was.. IT TOOK NEARLY 26 hours!! now my question is has anybody had this problem before? it seems very odd to me that WGBH Boston had only used protection for disc 3 and not the previous 2, and then again on season 2, disc 2 and 3 had the same problem, but the good thing is that those only took 7 hours each or so using fab decrypter..

I just want a better, faster process before I engage in season 3

any ideas?

The long time maybe because your drive "slipped" into PIO mode due to the errors. They should be DMA.

Check your hard drives and DVD drives.

As dolphin2 said, check your DMA settings.

Now having said that, yes I've at this problem happen to me before. Here's what happened:

I bought Vas Vegas Season 2, (It's 3 discs, double sidded) I went to back it up and could only copy the one side on every disc. I thought it must have been a bad set so I exchanged them. Same thing, would play fine in my standalone, but PowerDVD would freeze and pixelate.

So I took them over to my friends house and bam like magic, just DVD Shrink took care of it. So some reason my DVD-RW didn't like the discs. Still don't know why to this day!

"ARccOS? is the first and only available digital and dynamic DVD-Video copy control which effectively prevents unauthorized DVD copying on PC. ?Our customers are pleased to finally have found a copy control solution for DVD-Video that protects their content successfully."
HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!

@deline

I too tried it at another computer, and it worked, so it must be that my drive doesn't like the discs.. weird..

Most likely cause for a writer not do "see" discs is the firmware being out of date.

Have you both checked your firmware?

There are a lot of bad presses out there these days plus some burners read better or in the case of getting past errors actualy read worse so try different rippers if you have problems cause sometimes it works.

firmware, DMA, and dirty discs, bad press.... are just a few reasons why things like that can go wrong or give you longgggggg processing times. Make sure all is good and it should go away! I haven't come across a disc that I couldn't get to the hard drive and then burn! And my processing times are from 12mins to 90mins depending on what programs I use.

I'd like to add that some "Authoring" companies use different encrypting methods. You have to believe these guys are tuned in to decryption softwares and their many capabilities. So it's true in my experience that you can encounter DVD's with some strange encryption. i.e."Maria Full of Grace" which when I attempted to create a back -up copy It would only play with director commentary. This is not an accident. Nor is this DVD authored by the typical big name companies we see associated with major DVD releases. Turns out Nero could not complete the layer break, also the movie once copied would Open at a screen that ask "Do you wish to have the subtitles "Off" or "On"? Once you made your selection the screen paused abnormally then proceeded.

Now keep in mind the DVD's media content (previews) played normally. I was able to break this encryption using AnyDVD and CLONEDVD2, Not even VOB Blanker could handle this type of encryption (In the "Auto" setting). All I got with VOB surprisingly was green screen? So it's not a bad idea to have as much decryption software on hand as possible and keep a open mind. Every movie house or company does not use the same encryption approach with every film. They sometimes will throw you a curve. Be warned, Be prepared.

You got to watch those PBS disks alot of them have no protection because they are badly pressed, I think they must use some cheap mfr. I have backed up a number of PBS and many have watermarks, dimples and even cracks in the hub. Maybe Hollywood should try to use crap presses instead of ARccOS.
