hi i have spent a lot of time and money trying to get the perfect dvd backups from my toshiba sd-r5002 dvd writer.
i have been using datawrite classic 2x grey top discs(as i read they were supposed to be an excellent choice).
started burning dvd-r's at 2x speed, the result was starting to skip towards the end of the movie in my standalone dvd player but worked o.k. in my ps2?
then i tried burning at 1x, the result most would playback fine on my standalone player too.
how come this happens ? both the dvd burner and discs are rated 2x.
another problem now, lately though i have been burning at 1x every time and i have had a few discs which will fail to load up in my standalone dvd player, why is this ?
so anybody who can tell me is it :
crap media, or crap burner?

I have the same problem with a movie skipping or freezing at the middle to end of the movie. The beginning is always fine. Interesting to note for my own situation, The first 50 dvd-r I burned were perfect. I use Nero to burn, and have sampled many different types of media, all of which have the same outcome. The speed of the burn has made no change. Whats also interesting is that the skipping does not always happen at the same spot twice. If the disk is removed and reinserted, it may play through some area where it would have frozen before. Tried 3 different dvd player and some seem more sensitive then others. I'm thinking of using a different program to burn the dvd. My burner is the sony dru-500a with the most recent firware upgrade.

It might depend on how much you had compressed the movie as to whether you get frozen picture or pixelation towards the final chapters.
I do trust Datawrite Classic X2[matt grey] but if the film I'm backing up is 2+hrs then you really have to burn at X1 (even if burner is capable of more).

thanks for replying both,
i use dvddecrypter to rip
then dvd2one to compress
then nero(latest ver.) to burn.
i phoned up toshiba & retailer i purchased writer from and both said to use top quality discs only - verbatim, tdk, sony etc.
o.k. i have ordered 5 verbatim 2x discs and will be burning them at 2x and if they playback faulty in my standalone dvd player then i am sending the writer back as it is not doing as it supposed to do.
out of about 30 datawrite 2x classics i have burned at 2x about 7 have played flawless on my standalone dvd player which is a lg 5253 and about 25 have played flawless on my ps2 v7, so 5 coasters out of 30 because of 2x burning to me ain't acceptable.
i'll post results on the verbatim discs for you once i have received them and burned them.

LG models are a little fussy about what they play.
I'd rather burn at X1 on an average media & pay minimal prices. With success! Rather than pay silly prices for TDK,Sony etc blank media but I do agree that it's better to use quality media

but still surely if the writer is 2x it should write perfectly at 2x.
also used a verbatim 4x cd-rw and filled it with mp3 and that playsback faulty on my lg dvd player. with my old cd writer it played them back fine with philips 10x cd-rw discs.
do you reckon there is a fault with the dvd writer?
please reply.
cheers herbsman for previous reply.

No,I reckon the burner is probably OK man.

Sorry, there's no such thing as PERFECT...as much as we'd like to believe there was !: )
My Pioneer will burn flawlessly on certain X2 media but not others (altho whatever media failed for me...there's ppl talking really well about it on ? forum)
My Sony DVP-NS305 stand alone DVD Player is very forgiving...it'll play 2+hr movies that were burnt onto 50p (£0:50) Bulkpaq Purple general DVD-R. There's probably not many that wont play it without perhaps some pixelation.
Hope all this waffle helps some yeah...

Also I think your DVD Player will only play mp3 from CD (if I'm right...I may not be).
Media is a big part of it...everyone will have their own favourite. Although the Ritek , Verbatim always get spoken of A LOT
