I was wondering if somebody has any tips to share on how to teak parameters such as:

1-VBR Passes
2-VBR Bias
3-Qual Prec

I am pulling my hairs trying to get a pleasing Backup copy of a 2hr 10min ACDC concert using RB+CCE, but I keep getting pixelated backups. Wierd thing is I made a backup copy about two years ago with InstantCopy 7, and incredibly enough it looks better than the one I just made with Rebuilder. What's wrong with this pictrure?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

Do you use DVD-RB Pro? I was having this problem with a couple of movies, quality was very poor with DVD-RB free and HC encoder. Turned out the movies were interleaved. DVD-RB Pro cleaned that up very quickly and I now use CCE SP.

if you are getting pixelations it could be your media! what disc are you using? good media is the first and formost start to good backups! If you are not aware of this here is a media guide:http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

find out your manufacturer ID with this free program: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

I have used DVD-RB Pro/CCE with much larger movies than what you are doing and it came out perfect! Best Quality every!!!

I use CCE 2.67.... don't know about 2.7... but I think I heard someone else say they had problems with that version..... could be wrong.

MY SETTINGS:
VBR Bias = 25
Qual Prec = 16
VBR Passes = 2
those are my CCE Customized Settings.

Like my buddy Mort81 said, it won't make any difference with 2 VBR Passes or 3 VBR Passes. I've got CCE SP 2.70.02.00 + DVD-RB Pro 1.08.1 and my settings are the same as IHoe.

VBR Bias = 25
Qual Prec = 16
VBR Passes = 2

Except, I changeed the CCETarget to CCETargetSectors=2284095 aka 4460MB.

what kind of pixelation are you talking about
here is what you need to assess
is it blockiness or a discrepancy between high contrast (light and dark colors) in the picture or is it happening more during high action scenes?

w/ quality precision it is said that lower equals less "mosquito noise" and more blockiness

while higher setting equals less blocking but more mosquito noise

w/ vbr bias I here a higher setting leans toward a constant bitrate

so if it's happening only in higher "action" scenes you may try and nudge down your bias.

also w/ concert dvd's don't use any steal from extra's settings as your going to steal from parts of the concert stick to three or four passes on these harder mastered titles such as concerts if all else fails rebuilder still has some tricks up it's sleave, so let us know

Thanks for the info. I'm not quite sure what the term "mosquito noise" means, but what I called pixelation are little squares during action sequences. I also notice them to some degree during bright scenes, specially when it goes suddenly from dark to light.

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

the one thing I wanted to stress but didn't was the steal space from extra's setting's
do not use them w/ this disk

the mosquito noise is like very small pix (almost a bleeding of the one color over the nother) in high contrast scenario's such as white letters on a black back ground!

if blocking usually in the back ground is there just bump the precision up a bit say twenty
and the bias at about the same

set it to at least three passes for better distribution of the bitrate

tell me of any results,L8

Thanks!! I'm gonna do just that. I'm Also going to do one more pass (from 3 to 4). I also managed to find an earlier version of CCE SP (v2.67.00.23) with EclCCE. I'm gonna give that a try since IHoe mentinoned possible problems with 2.7xx. I'll keep you informed.

PS How do I Change the CCETarget to CCETargetSectors=2284095 aka 4460MB?

in your .ini file you will have to insert the settings under options segment

TargetSectors=2284095

just copy and paste the above line into the file.

the problem's w/ CCE 2.7 were the speeds displayed were not correctly being shown I use CCE 2.7 to this day and they have an update 2.70.04 that has fixed this bug.

Well, no luck again. I did 4 passes, Qual Prec 20 and Bias 20. I guss it's time to dive into the more complex options or just cough up extra $$$ for DL media.

have you viewed the ripped file??

please post your ini file so we can check out your settings.

I"m getting you some links together for checking out diferent options but I can't help feeling like this is just a foul source that rebuilder/cce is not playing nice w/

ps as I've not really run into a good problematic dvd like this if you get gung-ho in testing you may set your bias to about 5 just to see if it helps

also if your willing to do a little reading use this app

Rockas Matrix Editor

it let's you adjust filters and matrices by each segment and encode then view each one before you spend the time doing a complete encode

you can do a segment in usually less that five minutes then view how it looks w/ any # of multiple settings changes!

the first dl on the page

Yes I have, and it looks good when played using Cyberkink Power DVD.

Unfortunately, I can't. 2 or 3 times a year I do a System Restore that leaves my computer in the original state it came from factory. I try a lot of software and it's my way of cleaning the system. At the time I read the message I had finished the process.

Please do so. Video editing (as well as audio and photo editig) is a hobby of mine. I don't mind reading, I'll ask you guys if I have any doubts.

I don't have a workhorse computer. I've already wasted so much time and resources with the one I have. It's a decent one (Pentium M 1.6 GHz laptop/1GB RAM/128 MB video card/60GB 7200 RPM HDD) but it takes me hours to encode with 4 passes, and I have tried to back it up 4 times already (2-pass, 3-pass twice, and 4-pass).

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

I realize that last statement of mine you quoted usually set's people's stomach but I'm the kind that loves to tinker w/ things =)

I would love to see the outcome though
what region are you in? maybe after the fresh install things will get better starting a new, usually seems to resolve some issue's before we get the chance to figure out the cause.

what size is the original file and what are your displayed high/low/typical bitrates?

2or 3 times a year? that's plentylol

try out the link in my last post it will save you valuable time reencoding the whole movie.

sorry I know a lot of people turn here as they are getting discouraged, but when I run into a real problem it kinda intrigues me really I'm not getting joy out of your misfortune, but there's nothing better than solving a really tough one.

good luck

I appreciate your help. By no means take the earlier as a bitter remark. It's just I don't have time to waste right now. A lot of things happening in my life...

You are gonna have to trust my memory on this one, but the typical bitrates were something like 3700/2400/3300. I think they are pretty close, specially the ones on both ends. In the middle I'd say give or take a 100. The original size was close to 6 GB. Maybe I'm asking too much from DVD-RB. But, if a transcoder (IC-7) can do a good job, why can't I expect the same (or more) from DVD-RB + CCE?

For the time being, I think I'm gonna choose do the DL solution. I've never used it so I'm gonna ask some things about that on another post. This one is kinda bulky already. I have a big external Drive (250 GB). Even if I choose DL media backup, I'm gonna keep this one on ice. Don't like unfinished business.

PS I'm Region 1. Greetings from sunny Puerto Rico. About the 2-3 times a year...I'm kinda compulsive, according to my shrink. LOL!

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

With the combo from DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP; 2 Passes, 3 Passes or 4 Passes, you can't really tell any differences at all. Seriously, I've tried 3 Passes twice and 4 Passes once (with default settings: VBR Bias = 25, Qual Prec = 16) and I can't tell the differences from 2 Passes. Seriously, I think that 3, 4 or more Passes is just a waste of times only.

were you having trouble w/ these 3 movies you were testing? quite often I've been perfectly happy w/ opv setting's

hermes_vb w/ these measurement's you leave me even more puzzled that's not a particularly large file and the cbr'ish nature would leave me t othink there could be plenty of squeezing room, I'll be on the look out for the release what concert was it?
I still think there was something more @ play here but I'm paranoid and most don't want to know what my shrink has to say =)

AC/DC Stiff Upper Lip Live. It's a good one. DTS sound Rocks!!! I analyzed it using various programs like IfoEdit, etc and the main movie has 4 identical PCG's. Maybe that's what messing things up.

Another thing that may or may not be relevant is the following...I rip with Decrypter (and AnyDVD on the background). When I inseted the disc, Decrypter's log showed an error concerning file structure, maybe the 4 PCG's maybe something Decrypter can't handle. Should I try another ripper? If so, which one?

PS I have started another thread about DL media

@L8ter

Im intrested in changing the ouput file like you suggested.

What ini file do I place the (TargetSectors=2284095) in? The Rebuilder ini file?

If it is there then all I have to do is place it under the [Options] list like below?

[Options]
TargetSectors=2284095
Mode=1
OneClick=1
ReduceOpt=0
NoWarn=1
AdditionalOutput=1
LogFile=1
QuEncHQ=1
EncoderMinimized=1
RemoveDTS=1
HC_Quality=1
HC_Matrix=1
etc. etc.

Thanks for any help you will give.

@larrylje

personally I wouldn't exceed the 2265000 mark but in reality I just use this if I'm experiencing over sizing on certain films

but yes you are correct just insert what ever size you have become comfortable w/ and add the prefix " TargetSectors= " I believe its case sensitive, for single encoders you will use the CCE or HC prefixes such as they are w/ no spaces.

I hope all is going well for you, like I said I most normally use default escept when problems should arise.
