I am new to DVD ripping etc. and the different file formats.
I have bought an Archos AV 700 portable video player. Downloading DVDs using an DVD player and the pod is easy but somewhat time consuming.
I need some advice the availability of software to convert DVDs to a suitable format and download via my computer.

I have an Archos AV560 and have found a straightforward way to rip DVDs to a format suitable for the player.

Download DVD Decrypter and PocketDivxEncoder.

Setup DVD Decrypter - Mode should be set to IFO. In Tools->Settings, on the IFO Mode tab change File Splitting to None. This ensures that each DVD movie will only have one file.

By default DVD Decrypter will select the largest program on the DVD - this should be the movie. Click on Stream Processing, check Enable Stream Processing, then untick everyting except the video and the language you want.

Then click on the big button bottom left. Your DVD movie will then be copied to your hard drive - the location is shown under Destination. This may take a few minutes.

Once finished you can remove the DVD, and repeat for a number of DVDs.

Then start PocketDivXEncoder - and pick your AV700 as your device. Top left you have your file to encode. Click on the Browse button and browse to the location where you cpoied your DVD to. The output file will be automatically created for you. As a first go, I would just click on Encode now, go away for a couple of hours and come back to find a nice AVI file waiting for you. For multiple DVDs, instead of Encode now, click on Add to list, and more DVDs and then click on Encode All. Come back the following morning and you should have a number of AVIs waiting for you.

The default settings for PocketDivX work perfectly for playback on the Archos, and play back thru a TV was watchable. When you have converted a few movies you can then look at chnaging some of the settings. You could crop the black borders from the top and bottom of a widescreen movie (click Change next to Output dimensions). Or tick Use 2-pass encoding (under Adnaved Options) to get better quality, at the expense of taking twice as long to encode.

This works for me. AVIs end up between 750Mb and 1Gb depending on length.

Feel free to ask me anything - I'm still learning and testing software to get the best and easiest DVD to Archos transfer - the above is currently it.

Thanks for the replies.
Redfan.
I have downloaded and installed DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 and PocketDivxEncoder.
I have set "File Splitting" to "None" but when I click on the "Stream Processing" tab there is nowhere to "Check" "Enable Stream Processing", Also on what tabs do you mean "untick everything except the video and language I want".

Have you put a DVD in?. You should also select IFO mode of the Mode menu. DVDDecrypter will select the main movie by default. When you click on the Stream Processing tab, do you see a list of video, audio and subtitles? It is these (well the ones you dont want) that you should uncheck.

I am not at my main machine at the moment but I'll check my version and let you know later.

Thanks Redfan.
I have now got both pieces of software to work, and downloaded the video to my Archos 700 and they work fine.
Your comment Re:-untick everything except video and language is still a bit of a puzzle.

Do you not have a screen like this?

http://www.tagworld.com/ssj2_goha/PictureDetail.aspx?id=6e4665bc-...

This screen shows what I was talking about in unticking the unneeded languages and subtitles.

Glad you have got it working

Hi Redfan
Yes my screen is basically the same, I have only two items, video and audio there are only two folders on the disc, a dot in "Direct Stream Copy" and Map To "0xE0".
I used these settings and was able to convert my DVDs.
What do the Demux and Raw setting do.
Do they provide better output?

Neither option would improve the quality. DVDDecrypter just copies the DVD files from the disc to your hard drive, removing any copy protection along the way. Quality-wise the file on your hard drive is the same as the original DVD.

To improve quality, select 2-pass under Advanced Options in PocketDivX. The encoding will take twice as long, but the quality of fast moving action scenes should be improved (with not much change in the resulting AVI file size). You could also up the video quality to 90% or greater; this increases the bitrate at the expense of file size; and should increase the quality (bear in mind that for a given resolution (width/height) their is a maximum bitrate beyond which quality will not be improved).

hi there,

hope you dont mind me jumping in here but i too have the archos av 700 100gbs.

i'm having probs sending a ripped dvd to the machine and it keeps coming back with an error code of :

'error copying file'
the file type is not supported on this device. if it is a media file, you may be able to use windows media player to convert the file to a playable type prior to transfer. do you wish to skip this file now?

it then gives you the option of : skip, skip all or cancel.

i have followed the above instrucions and it still comes to this error code.

i have even transferred a file from the archos (a media file supplied with the machine) to the pc ok but when trying to send it back i get the above message even though i havent altered in any way :(

does anyone know whats going on here? does my machine have some sort of protection on it?

i am trying to transfer files by drag and drop, is this ok?

many thanks for any help

You have the Archos set to appear as a media device and the only way to transfer files is thru Windows Media Player. Change the Archos settings so it appears as an external hard drive, and then you can drag and drop without problems.

This got me as well when I first got my Archos.

Hey guys,
I'm new to the site. I have no problems ripping dvds, encoding them, transferring them, etc. But I would be interested in hearing your tip and tricks on how to improve the video quality on the AV700. The manual promised 'near-dvd' quality, and so far there is so much pixellation (especially when the lighting in a scene is dark) that its almost unwatchable.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Encode with a higher bitrate using 2-pass encoding. Also dont bother setting the resolution above 480x234 (unless you are outputing to a TV) since that is the maximum playback resolution of the 700.

What I did when I first got my 560 was to rip a short chapter from a DVD and use that to test different encoding programs/methods (that way I didnt need to wait a long time while the encoding took place). Then transferred these test files to the Archos for viewing.

redfan,
thanks for the reply. i'll try it.

have you been able to overcome the pixellation i'm seeing? i'm assuming this is in the quality of the video and not the quality of the screen.

megajam02,

i too get the same effect especially in dark areas also, will have to try out different encodings like redfan said.

redfan,

thanks for the info on dragging files, works a treat now :)

have any of you try the games on the archos yet?
only got the demos at the moment.

redfan,
sorry to ask more questions, but I have a couple more..

1) I assume youre using PocketDivx exclusively for encoding video?
2) What you you recommend as the optimum resolution to encode to? I dont plan on playing my videos on a regular tv, only the 700.
3) When you encode a full-length movie, say 2 hrs, how large is your completed AVI file?

Thanks!
