Can HP USB-to-IDE adapter be used on another burner?

On the weekend my USB-connected HP DVD420e external DVD burner overheated and burned out. I disassembled it to investigate the failure and found that HP used what appears to be an adapter to simply plug what looks like the regular DVD420 into a USB cable from the PC. Power however is supplied by a 12v power brick that plugs into the adapter. I have posted a photo of the adapter with labels for its parts for people to look at. See:

The drive appears to have failed when the head positioning motor severely overheated, producing a strong odor of overheated wiring.

I am wondering whether I could simply take any IDE-based DVD writer, such as my Sony DRU720 that I am replacing tomorrow in the PC with an LG burner, and use this Sony burner with that HP adapter to then allow me to use the Sony burner externally.

I have checked the power outputs on the power plug of the adapter and they are producing the normal 5/12 volts according to the correct pins on which the voltages are to be supplied.

Any educated guesses as to whether this might work. Note: I will not consider anyone responsible if I later try this out and the drive is damaged.
