Rip or Record Streaming Audio?

I guess I'm just a little confused. I hear people talking about programs that "rip" streaming audio.

However, when they explain how they're doing it, it sounds an awful lot like recording the stream in real time.

I guess I just think that ripping is different from recording. If I "rip" a music track from a CD to convert to an MP3, I'm not recording the song in real-time, I'm grabbing the track all at once, and the speed I do so depends on how fast my CD drive can read.

So, are there actual stream-ripping? Programs that "reach" the audio file and capture it all at once before it plays from beginning to end? Or just programs that allow you to record streams in real-time?

nope, you can only capture streams in real-time. try streambox or net transport, they both work very well.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

I'm also interested in recording streams. Are there tutorials on After Dawn for these programs?
