Ok, so I use DVD X Copy to make backups of my commercial DVDs. The problem is that every movie is like 7 GB, and always needs two DVD R's to make the copy.

Is there some good software out there that I can use to downsize the DVD file from the commercial DVD to fit on one DVD R? How would I use this software with DVD X Copy?

Any links, names, or explainations would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
don

hi DVD Shrink will allow you to fit your movies on a 4.7GB disc, this is a free download that is available on the afterdawn software page. or you can use Nero recode 2 or clone dvd2. (shrink is free, Nero recode is built into the newer versions of Nero & clone dvd2 you have to pay for but can get a 21 day free trial from slysoft.com.

shrink is the only one that will remove copy protection (it is no longer updated so struggles with some newer movies).

if you try to back up newer movies & shrink gives you errors there are several choices - you can use DVD Decrypter of fab decrypter to remove the copy protection (if using these you may need to use vobblanker with some movies to remove bad/dummy files put there as copy protection)these are free downloads that you will find with a google search.

or you can use AnyDVD (this runs in the background & removes copy protection whilst you just use shrink. (this is not free but is well worth the money ($40) as it is updated regulary & has yet to let me down backing up a movie.

there are several more options free & not free. but with the above software you should be able to back up any movie.

there are several guides on the forum pages to help you use all these programs.

if you have any questions just post back & we can offer you more help.

happy burning :-)

thanks so much for explaining the options so well! I just backed up my copy of Moulin Rouge (2002) using DVD Shrink. Although I think some of the video quality was lost during the compression, it seems to be very good software.

I downloaded the trial version (21 days) of AnyDVD and will definately check out how it takes off the protection on newer stuff that wont work with DVD Shrink alone.

thanks again for your help!

ok..... you want better quality.... then here is your best bet: DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE! It gives you the best quality out there, but it costs money! Sorry, but the good things cost. Rip to the hard drive and then let DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE do the rest..... of course you can download it's free version and use HC with it instead of CCE.... even that should be better than Shrink.... but it's DVD-RB Pro with CCE for me!can't get better than that! Just my 2 cents, don't try to give me change. I won't take it.

I was reading other threads about similar things, as well as your contributions in other threads. You really seem to know your stuff and are truly sold on this software.. Just a few things maybe you can clear up for a newbie like me:

I downloaded the free (v0.96) version of DVD ReBuilder (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75452)

Is this freeware what you were refering to when you say "DVDRebuilder Pro"? Or are you refering to the pro version (how much does the pro version cost, anyway?)

As for CCE, in this link,
(http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/c...)

I downloaded what they call a trial version of SP, with the following limitations:
----------------
This is the trial version. It is limited in the following ways:
1. A logo will be inserted in the encoded stream.
2. Encoder control list cannot be saved or loaded.
3. Framewise setting is not available for Quality setting.
----------------
What is this "logo" in the "coded stream"? Does this mean that the "SP trial version" of CCE is unusable?

From what you and many other people are raving about CCE, I am considering buying it. Where can I buy it? (the 'basic' version for $30, that is)

Ok, those are my questions. Sorry for being so newbie about everything..
Thanks,
don

ok, I just answered my own questions. Never mind. I think I'll try out HC before paying 58 dollars (found the website, btw) for CCE basic.

Is the $29.95 professional version of DVD Rebuilder significantly better than the freeware version?

wow....

It took me 5 hours to make a copy, using DVD Rebuilder and QuEnc. Sure, the picture quality was pretty good, but yeesh... so much time and effort.
Now, I find, the best way is to use AnyDVD with CloneDVD2. 26 minutes is much better than 5 hours! Quality is pretty good too - clearly better than DVD Shrink.

thanks for your input, everyone! I wouldnt have reached this conclusion if it werent for your help.

sorry it took so long to reply..... HC is long to encode than CCE! and yes the Pro version is wayyyyyyyyyy better than the free download version! I did movies that only took 39 mins! My best ever! usually the norm for a 7Gig movie would be about 100 0r so mins for me. but then again I got a kiss ass system! and by any means...... DVDRebuilder is the best way to go!!! Beating out all the others hands down!! Remember ..... down the road when you get your large TV, Monitor, or what ever..... quality is what counts. You don't want to get rid of thos DVDs that you are enjoying now do you? I switched over to using the best quality program for this very reason! And I already have a nice size TV!
