okay, when i tried to plug in my Seagate external storage harddrive this morning, my computer recognized that a "Mass storage device" was plugged in via high-speed USB. However, i could not find a way to access the normally labeled "F:" that pertains to the harddrive. i've gone through every little troubleshooting on my computer to figure this thing out. all drivers are built in with the hardware and cannot be modified in any way, therefore the software that comes with the drive does nothing but installs the actual program that is used to back up the primary drive to the external drive. i narrowed the problem down to being the actual device after trying different USB cables and plugging up to other computers. if anyone can offer any advice on how i can access the drive and retrieve the needed information on it, it would be greatly appreciated.

with thanks,
Josh

if i was u i would first remove ur email addy from this otherwise ddp will replace it with imanidiot one. Then i would try to take the drive out of the external case as most likely the ide to usb2 link has gone. then connect up like u would a second hdd, as secondary on the ide cable and try to reclaim all ur data.

Replacement enclosures aren't expensive. My akasa enclosure is a little bit fickle sometimes, It won't allow USB extension cables or hubs to be used, it has to be a direct connection which is a pain, but I can live with it.

Out of interest, wdowsing, how are you managing with 40GB for a downloading PC? Doesn't seem much for a machine that gets you stuff off the internet as its main role!

Fair enough. I use a 40GB hard disk for downloading at the moment, but the stuff is moved to a 160GB external.
