I havea CD-writer/DVD-ROM combo drive on my computer, I don't understand why it won't except DVD-R's aren't they pretty much the same thing?

no DVD-Rom can only Read and not Write

so i would have to buy a dvd burner so i can burn onto a DVD-R? is there something free that i can use in the meantime?
