i bought a gateway comp at a garage sale and have been adding hardware i have 2 256 pc133 sticks makeing 512

the processor is a intel celeron 1300 mhz 1.29 ghz
i pull one of the 256 out put in the 512 and it won't read the 512

i tried putting it in both slots and it won't read the stick

took the stick to a friends and put it in his comp. and it worked
so i know it is a good stick

i heard something else that some gateway computers won't exect
a 512 stick

any input on this issue would help me out thanks

Hi Longstree,
These PCs might require double-sided 256MB chips, they will not accept 512MB (or 256MB single-sided) chips.
This is a well-known issue.
You can fill 3 slots and get 768MB; that's it (but usually plenty).
Sellers want more $$ for the old double-sided RAM...
I can still get them brand-new, for $69 bucks (Canadian).
Single-sided (8-chip) 256's are only $45.
Too bad it won't run 512's though... ah, well.
Buddy probably sold it off @ garage sale after pricing memory upgrade, LoL :^)
But if you have any double-sided 256's, those things are gold.
