I recently had a catastrophic failure of my collection of Ritek G05s, necessitating emergency back-up to HDD (what I could salvage) and re-burning to TY DVD-R. In the process of doing this, a very strange thing happened:

I was re-burning a backup of Kill Bill Vol 1. I had recoded it into a DVD-5 using DVDRebuilder. The file size was the typical 4.31GB. When the movie was originally burned on Ritek media, the burned area of the disc extended almost to the edge of the disc. When I re-burned the movie onto TY media, the burned area of the disc was noticeably smaller (perhaps .5 cm from the edge). When I attempted to play the disc, it would not play on my standalone or on my computers. OK, bad burn. I tried it again and got the same result. I then used DVD Shrink to make the VIDEO_TS files into an ISO so that I could burn it with DVD Decrypter. Well, this worked perfectly. The DVD plays fine on my standalone. The wierd part is that the ISO is only 3.47 GB. What happened? No, I did not have any compression set in DVD Shrink. Anybody have any ideas?

My only guess is that you dumped some streams along the way, possibly without your consent.
If it ain't broke..

what program did you use to reburn the disk? you ripped to hard drive then used what progarm to burn? what speed? and what's the rated speed of those TYs? if they are 8x then I would burn no higher than 8x. That's why i like the +Rs and booktype to ROM so it's more compatible. but if your TYs worked before then they should work now! Did you do a disc quality test on those TYs?

this may seem crazy, but i've always used intervideo dvdcopy for burning. i never use it for compression, because i use dvd rebuilder for that. when i get a dvd that for whatever reason refuses to burn with dvdcopy, i use shrink to make an iso with no compression and burn with decrypter. this has worked perfectly for me over the course of about 700 burns. not that i'm not open to better solutions. the two bad burns were only on that one dvd, which had burned properly with dvdcopy the first time around. the strange part is that the iso was so small. i must have lost something somewhere. maybe my mind.

Is it possible in Shrink you did not have "Full Disk Backup" checked?

Weird problem.

see first post. i only ever use shrink for full backups. it is wierd, but more of a curiosity than a problem. the disc plays fine and looks great. it has only happened this one time, so i'm not worried. odd though.
