Gen 1 and 2 are the original iPods, more chunky looking design, apart from the 2nd gen has a touch wheel instead of one that really moves..

Because Apple didn't feel a colour screen was a significant enough addition to be painted as a new "generation" of iPod.

The first generation iPod and the second generation of iPod are the same, apart from the first gen has a scroll wheel, and the second gen has a touch wheel.

the scroll wheel you have to manually mave and the touch wheel you glide your fingers over like the newer iPods

The scroll wheel moves with your finger, like a real wheel, whereas the touch wheel does not, like on your 5g.
