I'm a newbie in this forum but I've been making legal back-up copies of DVDs for years and have battled every error message in the books. Now I have run across a series of DVD originals which do something entirely new (for me). The DVDs play without a hitch in a standalone player, but when I put them in my computer drives (LG, Sony) the drive doesn't even recognize that a disc is present. I go to the windows XP Explorer and click on drive H, and a message says "Please insert a disc in drive H". Whatever this is, it looks like the perfect copy protection system, if the manufacturers could implement it on all DVDs! But if a cheap DVD player ($125) has no trouble reading these discs and displaying the film on screen, shouldn't we be able to expect that any decent computer DVD drive could stop being so picky, and do the same thing without gripes and error messages?

Sonuds like you need a firmware upgrade! Are these discs newer discs?

Anyway, give some details on your drive and maybe someone here can point you to the relevant site for firmware upgrades--or better yet, maybe you know the site already.

the Sony is a brand new dual-layer-capable R/RW burner, and the LG is just a year old. They both play everything I put in them, including many brand-new discs. Just these three or four discs are invulnerable to their laser beams, which makes me think it has something to do with the discs. However I will take your advice and see if there is any newer firmware available. I will also take the discs to a hardware dealer and see what they do in his drives and players. Wondering again why my standalone player plays everything and never asks for a firmware update?

Well, firmware upgrades are only for the drives in your computer--NOT the stand alone player (the one connected to the TV). If you're having issues putting new commercial DVDs into your drive, then yes, it's probably a firmware fix (it doesn't matter if the drive is new--the discs are probably newer). If you're having compatibility issues with the burned discs in your player, then I would suggest +R discs because they can be written as Rom (the format that commercial DVDs are written as).

If you have an older player, then maybe you should use -R discs because the - format is older.

This wont help you, but I thought I would mention I have 2 Sony dvd dual layer drives and both have given me the same problem you mentioned. Whats weird is they only do if for so long ( a day at most ) and never at the same time. When one wouldnt read the disc, the other would. Told you it wouldnt help but I thought maybe it could help diagnose your problem. I gave up a long time ago.

no, these two DVDs never play in the Sony and never play in the LG. I insert the disc in the LG and the green light blinks and never stops blinking. Power DVD crashes completely. And yet the disc plays in the stand-alone player. My point is that computers and their drives and software are so sophisticated that they should be able to be instructed to do something as basic and simple as reading a DVD the way the drive in the stand-alone player reads it. Just switching over from ripping and decrypting and ifoediting to a simple "stand-alone" mode - - - just play the disc!
