Hi. I had been making backups of my DVD's for months and months using DVD-Shrink or DVD Decrypter with Nero 6.6.0.18 and never really had a problem.(using sony DVD-R) Recently things have gone bad. I starting getting nothing but coasters caused by a "Reset occured" error. I tried sony and verbatim DVD's and still no luck. After much reading, here is what I have tried (with a failed burn after each step, most times it was failing durning the simulation which then hangs my computer):
- removed all burning software, cleaned registry and reinstalled DVD-Shrink, DVD Decrypter and Nero 6.6.0.18
- removed Nero 6.6.0.18 and went back to version 6.6.0.16
- verified my drive is at the latest revision which it was, but did it again anyways to be sure
- Nero stated that my ASPI was corrupt so I tried installing aspi_471a2, but Nero still said it was corrupt. So I installed ForceASPI_v17.
I have now had three successfull burns (as per Nero), but my DVD player won't play them. I tried a DVD I copied before my trouble started and it still plays fine.
I have included the log from my last attempt. Not sure if much can be gained from it as it did complete successfull. But any help thoughts would be appreciated. The only thing I can think of is that my drive no longer works?????

you are writin very close to the edge of the disk try reducing dvd shrinks target size to 4300mb you'll find it under edit and preferences ghange to custom and set in 4300
have you tried using DVD Decrypter to burn an iso file from shrink that would take Nero out of the loop thus eliminating any Nero issue

I created an ISO file with DVD-Shrink and then burnt it at 4x speed to a verbatim DVD-R using DVD Decrypter. It said that it completed successfull, but it won't play in my DVD player (It just spins and spins) or in my computer.(I only have the one DVD drive in it) I double checked, and yes, my DVD player still plays the previous DVD's that I copied.
I didn't set the size of the ISO file to 4300MB. So I guess I will try that next. I'm getting really frustrated!! It's got to be either a bad batch of verbatim DVD's or my DVD writer has packed it in?????

Didn't they just introduce -media ability to that drive. Before I decided it was packing it in I would try with +media. If it works ok with + then maybe wait on another firmware update

No it has always had DVD-R support, they may have just added more supported media to it. The latest firware release was 2004, so I think that might be it for updates. When I first started using this drive, I was using Memorex DVD-R's with unreliable results. So I switched to Sony DVD-R's and things were good.(about 20-30 good burns)Then I started getting some that would fail and some that would work. Eventually I ran out of Sony so I bought some Verbatim DVD-R's as I heard these were a good brand. So far I have only got about 2 out of 10 to work. (like I mentioned earlier, a lot of times it was failing even durning the simulation)
I'm going to go buy a DVD-RW before I go any further. I just don't know what brand to buy??????? I have never used a DVD-RW before. Do I need to format it or anything or is it ready to use out of the case?
Thanks for all and any help....

Well I bought some Sony DVD-RW's (RITEKW - 01). When I tried to use Nero at 2X to burn DVD files that were 4216MB it completed successfully. But when I try to play it in my DVD player it says disk error. Ok, maybe it won't play DVD-RW's. So I tried to play it in my computer and it won't recognize the disk either. In windows explorer, it says that drive is not accesible. When I did a disk info in Nero it says the disk is empty. By looking at the disk it does look like something got written to it.
Any thoughts? DVD drive at fault? I included the log file of this burn below. Thanks....

Man... Nu-Global don't offer much support at there site huh? I just searched there site for info on this drive. They don't have much info there. I did find this though.
support DVD-R list
CMC CMCMAG. 2X DVD-R
CMC CMCMAG.AF1 4X DVD-R
Gigistorage GSC002 4X DVD-R
Maxell MXLRG01 2X DVD-R
Maxell MXLRG02 4X DVD-R
Mitsubishi MCC01RG20 4X DVD-R
Optodisc OPTODISCR004 4X DVD-R
Princo PRINCO 4X DVD-R
Ritek RITEKG03 2X DVD-R
Ritek RITEKG04 4X DVD-R
TaiyoYuden TYG01 4X DVD-R
TDK TDKG02000000 2X DVD-R
TDK TTG01 4X DVD-R
That does not look very promising. I thought I had read before about a 379 update but could not find anything about one.
Only ones on that list I would have faith in are Taiyo Yuden and maybe the Ritek.

Verbatim DVD-R's was what I was originally using which was not working for me. So I tried Sony DVD-RW and no go either. I tried burning some music to a Sony CD-R and it works fine. Does anyone know if the same laser is used for CD's and DVD's or are there two different ones in a CD/DVD drive?
Cheers....

Soooooo.......I guess since I'm using good media (verbatim) and the DVD burner thinks it made a good copy, but yet doesn't recognize it afterwards, the DVD drive must be at fault?
The thing that confuses me is, for a while Nero was failing durning the simulation. Then after much tinkering, it now completes the simulation and burn successfull, yet the DVD's don't work.

my last suggestion would be to try your burner in another machine where the verbatim dvd-r's 16x I've come across a couple of posts where this media has been giving some burners trouble

Ok. I'm going to buy a new burner. Any suggestions on brand/model that will give me the most success with different brands of media?(including DVD-+R and -+RW)
