unable to complete disk check?

trying to do a hard drive check for errors, via
right click c: > properties > tools tab > error checking
it goes through for a about 3 min then a error message comes up saying windows unable to complete the task?

why is this happening -- thanks for any help

This usually happenes when you have some other programs running at the time or your windows explorer is open while you disk check thats happened with me but im not sure :-(

try running in safemode
