I would like to ask a very simple question. If you multitask while Nero Vision is transcoding .avi files into .vob , does it increase the chances of there being glitches in the finished product?

Like for example, when you watch the DVD on your DVD player, the quality will perhaps not be as good as it should be, or there will be small errors etc...?

When I say multitasking I dont mean playing 3 huge video games while surfing the web and running an anti-virus scan all at the same time. I mean just having MSN on, firewall and AV software active but not scanning or anything, having perhaps one or two I.E/mozilla windows open.

Or is it perhaps during the actual burn that you should really avoid multitasking?

Don't run anything at all.

I leave on AV, but a lot of people will tell you to disable auto-protect while you're transcoding and burning.

I have noticed that if you have your spyware running while transcoding then it increases the time to transcode , in my case dramatically. I have 1gig RAM and I dont multitask during transcoding process.

Doing other things won't effect the quality. But it might cause failures if available memory drops below what Nero requires or if slowing Nero down triggers some timing "bug". In theory, only burning to disk on a drive that must be fed at a constant rate should be at risk from other loads on the system.

Yeah, in theory.

Anyone who's been doing it a while will tell you not to run anything while you're transcoding/ripping/burning etc.

I have 2 GB RAM, and the most that I will do while transcoding is prepare the disc art with the EPSON software, and the screen saver is never disabled. I put the antivirus program to sleep. I do nothing while encoding, though. I usually batch a few discs and leave the computer untouched even in low priority mode. The only thing running is the screen saver.

FWIW: I've only been using Nero for about 2 months, but have transcoded/burned around 100 different DVDs. I leave my anti-virus, anti-spyware, screen saver etc. running. And I use the PC normally while Nero is running. The PC is used by several people and they log on and off and switch users while Nero is running and no problems so far. Originally, I was worried about the burning phase but even that works just fine even with other CPU intensive things going on.

I can only assume that the software has gotten better and/or the problems people have/had (or are afraid they will have) are not a sure thing. Maybe I'm just lucky to have a system similar to one Nero tests with.

For me, transcoding is too time consuming to stop doing everything else while its happening.
