ok, where to start...

i'm new to this forum and all (most've you prolly hear that way too often :-P). and i've recently started backing up games for my ps2. i own a lot of imports, so i'm terrified to get scratches on them. so i just recently bought a dvd burner, along with a 50 pack of memorex dvd+r's.

i've made perfect backups of the following games:

god of war
neo geo battle coliseum
samurai spirits: tenkaichi kenkakuden

my ps2 is modded mind you, the all worked perfectly the first time. and when i tried to boot one of these games up again, they go into the browser screen and the "please insert a playstation or playstation 2 disc" screen appears.

after 100 times of relentlessly trying to get these games to work again, they miraculously boot up. but, when i i wanna put in another back-up, the ps2 doesn't read it.

btw, all my "authentic" games work, the back-ups work...when they want to...

can anyone help this n00b or at least explain to me wtf is going on with my system?

thnx in advance :-D

Yes you're feeding it garbage and it's reacting accordingly. The best Memosux will code out to is Ritek (okay), the worst it'll code out to is CMC Mag (do a search). Your always better using quality 4x or 8x media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com
Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm

106. Q. Where can I find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji and Sony have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no guarantee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. The exception is that Sony MIJ 8x DVD+R's will always code out as Yuden000T02. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

^^ thanx for the suggestion.

but the thing is... i've used this kinda media on some games that i backed-up in the past. and it worked for me no problem. i have a back up of MGS3 that i've had for a year, and it always worked. the most recent back ups that i mentioned before have worked perfectly the first time i booted them up, now, they work when they want to (which pisses me off like you wouldn't believe). i wanna know why my ps2 is acting up like this and if there is any way possible for me to fix this problem.

If only I had a dollar every time I heard that, if you use Memosux, enjoy your coasters.

I've got a sneaking suspicion those memosux discs have been wearing down your laser, and are by now slowly deteriorating...
I wonder how much longer your ps2 will last before you can either scrap it or are forced to get a new laser.....

Wanna tell me off, go ahead.

hello

you say a couple of things that do not quite ring true,or add up?

then this

which is it?,you have either been burning games for a long time or you havent, unless the copy of mgs3 is not burnt onto the same disk's as the ones you mention

either way i believe those disks you are using are not the greatest,i think if you try another brand,it will solve your problem.
you must remember that using poor quality media will give you problems, they have a cheap dye, that fades very quickly.you may notice that cheap disk's have a very light purple base, compared to the dark coloured dye you will see on top quality disk's.
keep the disks away from sunlight, and away from heat
even fingers marks will cause a game not to load,so try cleaning them with a clean cloth and a bit of furniture polish

dont take this the wrong way,but if you have backed up god of war, which requires a considerate amount of knowledge, then i would have thought you would/should have known that memorex disks are not the greatest quality
i have never used them myself,so cant really say,but from what i have read,it seems to tell its own story

hope this helps you out a bit

OK make it simple for the Newbie.

1. DO NOT use Memorex DVD's as they totally suck as stated by just about everyone who posted in the thread already. Even if by some chance you do get a game here or there to work they will not work for long and you will be risking the laser in your PS2 as well.
Memorex uses very cheap dye when they make their DVD's. To to known good quality media:
Taiyo Yuden (watch out for fakes)
Ritek G04
Verbatim
Sony or Maxcell (made in Japan only)
even some TDK may work.
2. i suggest an 8X DVD-R disc, some people like the +R but not me. I can tell you after several hundred games (Xbox & PS2) and movies that i have had a great success rate with the -R and a so-so with +R.
3. Burn the 8X DVD at 4X with your burning program of choice.
4. Make sure you check the net and see if the firmware on your burner is the newest one available, just because it is new doesn't mean that the firmware is the newest one out there.
5. make sure you shut down anything that could be running on the computer like anti-virus software, and do not use the PC at all when burning games. It takes a lot of working memory so the pC needs all it can get to do a good job.
6. alway buy small 5 pack of media to start out with until you find one that works for you every time. then you can go out and buy a bigger pack size.
