Hello,

Im new to this site and pretty new to burning CD/DVDs etc. Basically I have just purchased a HP Pavilion dv5020us in the last 2 months, this system came with SONIC installed, but i have recently started buring DVDs using DVDDecrypter, and DVDshrink, thats when I realised that I needed NERO so that I can burn directly to disc once the file is compressed in DVDShrink, however, since I have installed Nero, I have not been able to burn anything, the version of Nero that I have is 6.3.1.23. Basically at this stage, I cant even burn an audio CD on any software for example iTunes, Sonic or Nero, it was working perfectly on all software until Nero was installed, so I associate this with the problem, alot of my friends have all this software installed and all works properly, at this point I am totally unsure as to where I should try and find a solution. For example when I try to burn an audio CD, it will work properly until 98% and then Ill get an error saying there was an error writing to disc, so I am very frustrated at the moment, and I would greatly appreciate any help you guys can offer, should I start by uninstalling/reinstalling? or perform some updates?
Thanks alot

Many people report having problems with Nero and Roxio installed(in your case would be Sonic).

First, you did not need Nero to burn the files once they were compressed with Shrink. You can have DVD Shrink make an ISO, instead of HDD folder, and burn with DVD Decrypter.

The Nero version you have is old. If you install version 6, you should get version 6.6.0.18. Here are some links:

ftp://ftp.us2.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

If you update to the newer version, first get the Nero Clean tool fron Nero website and uninstall the version that you have now. But again, if you only use Nero to burn the DVD, you can do that with DVD Decrypter.

You should get DVDFab Decrypter( another great free ripper, http://www.dvdidle.com/download/DVDFabDecrypter29.exe ), to rip the DVD to your HDD. DVDFab it is being update, kept current with the encryptions, DVD Decrypter is not. After you rip the files, use DVD Shrink to make them fit to a DVD-5 and create an ISO to burn with DVD Decrypter.

Anyway, if you want to keep on using Nero, you should post your Nero burning error log.

Shrink uses Nero or DVD Decrypter to burn the disc. Does not burn by itself.

If you have Sonic you can burn your output file from Shrink, just make sure it is in iso format which is what Decrypter would burn anyway. You just have to output your file to your HDD and then manually burn with Sonic.

Thanks alot cyprusrom, arniebear , ill uninstall Nero and use the cleaning tools that you have recommended from the Nero site, and then Ill check to see if I can burn with just SONIC( say an audio CD for example) , if everything is ok,ill install the version of Nero that you have provided a link for. Just one question, im a little confused as to how I output my file to my HDD, say for example in DVD Shrink I can see my file compressed, say to 4.6GB, now how can i access this file in this format other than using Nero in association with Shrink? As arniebear you have said below that I can use SONIC manually, but I dont understand how I can get access to the compressed file manually, say by browsing in explorer. But regardless I understand what you mean by using DVD Decrypter to burn it anyway, so Ill perform the above mentioned steps and get back to you. thank alot, much appreciated

Choose your file and your settings and then hit the backup screen. Then choose to save as an iso file this will be sent to your C drive unless you specify a folder.

When done open Sonic

Choose your image file and burner

Burn

excellent Thanks alot Arniebear for all the help, i have one small question left- (not major), i am currently just buring a couple of audio CDs in Sonic, say for example I have all 19 songs written onto the CD, then i get an error message saying that there was a problem with burning, but then I check the CD and all the songs are on it, I was getting the same message with Nero when I had it installed, why am i continuosly getting this message when in fact all the songs are written to CD? This is not a major problem but I'm just curious as to why I am continuosly getting this message. Thanks again for all the help

You can try doing a system restore to back before you installed Nero. Maybe this will correct the problem.

this was the first thing i tried when i started having the problems, Im thinking it could be the media that I am using now also, Im using PhilipsCD R80 52X multispeed, but again, i think I am clutching at straws. I just burned a couple of audio CDs on Sonic, all songs were written , but got an error on all burns, I then used iTunes and the burns were successful. yeah its more frustrating than anything, as this is a new machine so its definetly not a hardware issue. Is there anything else that i could do besides another system restore? thanks again

You may be getting that message because of burn speed, those are 52x speed disks and probably are being written at max speed, whatever that is for your burner. Have you tried WMP to burn any of your CD's?

thanks arniebear, no I havent tried WMP, so i think I will have a look at that today, as you mention it in relation to the burn speed, SONIC firstly calculates the burn speed and estimates by default the burn to take approx 3 mins 30 secs, then once it calculates it, the burn speed is always 8x(slow), this increases as it goes through the songs and eventually gets to a max burn of 24x at the end, should it be burning at 24x the whole way through? But I will try WMP as you suggested and see how that goes. I mean the main thing is that the songs are writing-(just with an error), just one final question, what time should I be looking at for an audio burn? its taking 5-6 mins now, at 24x is should be taking around 3 mins 30 as SONIC originally calculates?i think the max speed for my burner is 24x, how do i find this out? IF i have 52x discs, the max burn speed will then be 24x, or should i purchase different speed discs? thanks again for all the help

i have tried burning on SONIC, WMP and iTunes and now it is failing on all 3, i have followed all your recommendations, but i dont know what the problem is. I had a look at the DVD drive properties in my computer and it says that the device is working fine, any final suggestions? Thanks again
