Hi im currently running Norton 2003 on my p.c I have the firewall and antivirus. Instead of renewing my subscription again I was going to buy Norton internet security 2006. I went on Amazon to get it but when I read the customer reviews it put me off as allot of people had allot of bad things to say about it. Im no computer buff so can someone recommend the best package for me to use or even tell me if Norton is still ok?

Thanks for your time

There you can find good free firewalls and antiviruses.

I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Did you like your previous Norton? Norton is a good antivirus program as you can see for example from these tests. -> http://www.av-comparatives.org

And choosing an antivirus is like choosing a car, people have different opinions =)

I just wanted to show you that there are free options too, but Norton is a good program.
Free doesn't always mean bad =)

See people say things like that on forums but never explain why!
I was using Norton 2003 and did like it i dont mind paying for it but when i logged on to Amazon and read the customer reviews hardly any said it was good.

What makes it terrible?

Does it not find viruses or somthing?

People go on about it slowing down your p.c but is this only Norton?

Bottom line should i buy it?

p.s I will check out your guide for free Antivirus :>

norton is terrible because it is not good at catching new viruses, and it uses a LOT of system resources.

AVG Free is an excellent (and free) virus app. When I uninstalled norton, and ran AVG for the first time, it found seven viruses on my computer that norton never saw, two were trojans!

norton is crap, go with either AVG or AVAST.

Ok, i typed a huge anti norton rant but my mouse bateries ran out on me, so now there recharged i'll start it aggain.

Well ok,Why Norton is TERRIBLEin my oppinion, basiclay lets start on the system hog nature of its IS suites, a while back i was using Norton IS 2004, it has a nice graphical user interface, but sadly thats the only credit i can give symantec for it..

People think Nortons products are bad because they are "bloatware", they tend to look nice and be simple to use, sadly this wo'nt cut it for most users, the protection there products offers is lacking, the AV system is'st as good as you'd think, i recall in fact i think it was just last week, my next door neighbour's (Hehe he's so old, he's the only one on the block who'd let me in their house :p) Norton sub scription ran out, the only protection he had was the firewall i think, well anyway i unistalled Norton IS 2005 for him and installed AVG free and a few other programs, basicaly the total CPU usage all the protection i installed for him added up to bout near enough half of what nortons product added up too, as for what was found after the scan...7 trogan hourses i think he said, many other infections to boot..

So, the AV is not even as good as avg free!!i think, when unistalled it leaves piles of junk in the scattered everywhere in the registry, registry mechanic found about 250+ entries, ccleaner found about 70+, so it changes the windows registry a fair lot, its just bad..to think people pay for this!! the protection is'nt anything special, infact its quite bad, the CPU usage it consumes is...bad to say the least and everyone still loves it, don't get it myself..

Well, at the end of the day all i can say is if you like it, then stick to it.

That all :D

Instead of dissin norton i'll give you a tip here, scrap it and use theese:

sanecrazy

Im using Norton2003 systemworks and it work excellent I even went to my local PC store one day asking for the latest norton e.g 2005 & 2006 and I was told that as long as I update it there is no different just keep it up to date plus the one I have is the best because it has more features as long as its updating fine so my advice is to keep what you have and just make sure you do online update.

You are right that people never explain and im sure some never tried and just saying what they hear from others but Im telling you through my own experince that Norton antivirus is one of the best and thats why you cant get it for free like many others.

You may want to consider adding some extras for your PC security like having some anti-spyware or firewall, like im using with my norton e.g Ewido anti-malware and Zonealarm firewall they are perfect.

I have 2 computers and 1 labtop I have Norton systemworks2003 in all and before I used to have Panda antivirus and AVG antivirus before they all free and I had many problems I even used to format almost every month and after having Norton I never format any of my PCs as it has many features that other antiviruses dont have and Im sure you know.

Thank you

In agree with what aabbccdd said, i think this thread is going to turn inot some big norton rant soon, maybe it should be closed..

I think that people will get the picture though, norton's products need to be improved, at the min they suck.

I recoment using my guide:

rav009 you are anti norton :D

my opinoin is that all the free anti viruses softwares will only deduct and removw some of the viruses. However, some of the viruses they find, they cant get rid of and just indicate to you that there is a virus everytime you do a scan, therefore, you have to remove these viruses your slef.
Well knowen anti viruses softwares such as Macafee, Norton or others that people have to pay for are well protective and they block any viruses as well as quaranating the tough ons.

Just take a look at peoples who have viruses on thier systems and find out what sort of anti virus they have in this forum?

-In this forum most of the people who experinced viruses in thier PCs always have free antivirus therefore they always ask for help and you make your own judgement about what is the best.

For me Im not trying to convince you that norton antivirus is the best out there but I prefer norton anti virus than any free anti viruses such as AVG free.

Sorry but i think a lot of that is b/s,just because ia program is free doesnt mean its in anyway lesser than the paid for product, even though in most cases this is'nt true...but AVG free is alot better than nortons AV system in my experiences and what the majority thinks, when you talk about free programs in general not being as good and not finding viruses is complete crap in my oppionion...

Infact, someone i know recently ran out of a sub scription for his Norton IS, i unstalled it for him etc and scanned with avg free, what was found was 7 trogan horses according to him, prooving just because the product is free doesnt mean in anyway that the definition file will be worse than the other in not finding viruses..and the qaulity won't realy veairy too much either(for thoose people who think free is on the whole poorer..)

???

"In this forum most of the people who experinced viruses in thier PCs always have free antivirus therefore they always ask for help"

I dont think thats a valid point at all, understand ways in how the person may become infected first(its all about the user)then judge on why the people with the free programs ask for help..
AND i think you'll find that most people actualy use Norton IS here at aD(AARRGGGGHHHHH!!!!) so....

Thats fine with me, its a waste of time though in my veiws but if you like it for some reason then use it lol.

Yeh as you can see i'm anti norton :D..and proud..

i agree also AVG is still better than norton by far i heard of lots of people that have used norton and dumped it ran AVG and find all kinds of problems ,norton is a bloated program thats not worth near the money they want for it

Trend Mirco PC-cillin or NOD32 are the best out there, norton cant touch either of theses programs

Ok thanks guys

I read all your comments and decided to have a go with AVG Free. I?ve uninstalled Norton but AVG didn?t pick up anything else when I installed it so it looks like I was virus free. Understand money was not the issue I was going for Norton but there seems so much opposition to it that I thought sod it and went with AVG

I?ve always had the view that free couldn?t be better than a program you had to pay for but that?s not because I know so it?s just the way people think I suppose. Anyway we will see how it goes.

So the question is should I Get rid of Norton Firewall and go with Zonealarm?

One more point I did an on line scan with bitdefender when I had Norton and it found about 8 Viruses but 7 of them were located in Norton?s Quarantine list so im assuming they don?t count? Are people checking that possibility?

pheeeww

Cheers :>
