The other half has decided that the kids need an xbox and although I'm quite good at PCs dvds and PS2s when it comes to xbox I havent a clue where to start
my questions are

1. Recomended mod chip ?
2. is there a software boot option like swap magic for ps2 ?
3. hdd upgrade required ?
4. How to backup disks software required and procedure ?
5. what is soft mod ?

Any help would be appreciated but keep it basic at this point as I know nothing about xbox the hardware aspect isnt a problem as I repair pcs for a living but the ins and outs of xbox is a different story

Really These Days You Really Dont need A Modchip at all....The Easiest Way To go is softmodding.
Softmodding is Installing a Different Dashboard through a Linux Loop Hole in the xbox.3 Games Came with Linux SplinterCell(1st One),007 Agent Under Fire(not Platnium),And Mech Assault(1st one).
for a Tutorial on Softmodding go here

As for everything else and hdd upgrade will only be if you want to save games to your HD.Instead of Burning Discs.....

No Software Boot Disc like swapmagic for the xbox Thank God,Just put the backed-up game in and play.

To back-up a Game First you will need to Mod your xbox(either with softmod or modchip)
Then You will need to Hook your Xbox up to your PC So you can FTP.This has to be done because your pc drive cannot read xbox DVD's Because they are Xiso's which is an Unrecognized format.the only thing that reads them is your Xbox DVD Drive. So what you do is FTP them from your Xbox DVD Drive to your Computer. 1. Recomended mod chip ?
DuoX2 is what i have and love it

2. is there a software boot option like swap magic for ps2 ?
Yes, you could also softmod the Xbox

3. hdd upgrade required ? my answer would be yes.
It is much easier to have all the games right on the HDD, then the kids just choose which they want and play. Also the load times are faster. And then you can keep the discs out of their reach for safety. Also it is much easier to take a game and put it on the HDD with DVD2Xbox, then it is to make a second copy on another DVD

4. How to backup disks software required and procedure ?
read the tutorials here, there is a lot more to know than you think. PS2 is childsplay compared to Xbox back ups. You will have to know how to FTP and create an Xbox ISO. Go here and read some of the tutorials on those subjects.

5. what is soft mod ?
there are also tutorials at the above site on that. either in the section i linked you to or the softmodding section here
