any help on this would be much appreciated: i am using the latest build (7.0.8.2) of nero on a winxp pro machine. also, nero was working fine as of 2 weeks ago. no matter what i go into, whether audio cd, burn iso, burn dvd, etc... nero locks itself up at the "lead-in" stage of burning and will stay there for hours with no activity/burning, with little to none cpu activity. when i choose to abort the burn, the drive light on my liteon dvdburner comes on and stays on and will not eject the disc. i'll get a message saying to wait as nero is aborting burn, but that will also stay for hours with no activity. at this point all i can do is ctrl-alt-del, stop nero and reboot. then i can eject the disc. i have gone back to 2 previous builds of 7 with the same results plus the last build of 6. the last build of nero 6 will go about 1-2% into the burn and then completely stop and i'll have to ctrl-alt-del again to get my disc back. i've confirmed using other software that the drive will rip and burn cds and will eject just fine. the only other software i've installed that is related to cds/dvds is a audio dvd program that i've since uninstalled. i'm sorry i have no log due to the ctrl-alt-deleting that i have to do. does anyone have any suggestions/ideas as to why nero would not burn? this is seriously driving me nuts. thank you again.

There might be a log anyway. Check this path for the nerohistoy.txt file. It will tell us some information if its there.
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt

These things record all burns, and we only need the last one. The burns are seperated by something like this
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======

Windows XP 5.1
IA32-xxxx-xxxx-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and be sure to edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them before posting to the forum.

I just reinstalled latest version and tried an audio cd burn with no results--drive didn't burn, no activity. hit cancel then ctrl-alt-del to stop app. drive now won't open until i reboot. here is the last log file in the log, which was apparently done march 17, so whatever happened to my system was done in the last 10 days:

We can work off this log.
It looks like firmware needs updating
Quote:

KSOB looks like the latest for that drive.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2056
The rom drive is probably behind also, but it only reads, so its not as critical as the burner. I found a listing for it, but i cant figure out what firmware version to suggest, so i wont.

You have the minimum amount of ram suggested for dvd ripping, but you have to manage memory use by shutting down any not needed for burning program. Nero only had 122mb to play with, so it probably tried to use your HD or CPU to make up for it.

This is a CD burn, but still, slow it down to 16x max on CD burns, less, if you notice failures, or skipping on playback.
I couldnt tell what kind of media you were using, but that could be a major issue also, even on a CD. CDs seem to be more tollerant of bad media. Not DVDs. Verbatim and Tayio Yuden are some of the best media out there. Verbatim uses various manufacturers, and Tys can be hard to find locally sometimes.
http://www.supermediastore.com sells genuine Tys, and they usually have a sale going on.
I didnt see any bad driver conflicts listed in that log. Try the firmware update and other things suggested. That version of Nero isnt being reported as buggy like the one before it was, so your version of Nero should be OK.
Out of date firmware could cause that long lead time, as it was probably trying to to a power calibration test on unknown media.
Post back with another log here, if you still have failures after the updates. It may take more than one log to get you going again.

Good job! The firmware update will help a great deal. You're doing a good job on working with your minimum memory, but always keep an eye on it when burning by shutting down everything not needed.
Memorex is usually bad media, but those riteks are not bad. You got lucky with those. I only use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media and it doesnt let me down. Sometimes i use Ritek and they work fine too, i just stick with Verbs and Tys out of habit. If you continue to get failed burns, try switching media first. Some systems are picky as to the media it likes.
You were also using +R media and successfully booktyped it to DVD-ROM, and that will help standalones recognize the disc.

Something you should change is your target size.
Quote:
Last address to be written: 2286000 (508:00.00, 4464MB)

That setting burns too close to the edge of the disc. If you change the size to Custom and select 4300 you dont burn to the edge of the disc, and avoid end of movie freezing/skipping. With good media, i set mine to 4400, but thats the max i go.

My buddy alkohol has a very good guide for using Nero:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436
I think he shows setting the target size in there.

it sure is strange to see that in a successfull burn log where it id'd the media correctly before that. Try different media, NOT memorex or anything like that. Use good media even though ritek is ok, try something else.

Media is easy to change, and doesnt cost much more to get the good stuff. If the media you are using is working, you might as well stick with it. Many ppl have good luck with riteks.
There are some memory manager programs out there that might help free up some memory, but like i said, you are doing a good job at managing it. If you can up you memory to 1 gig, open programs will not be as much of a problem. Check out this free program. It might help:
