Hi all,
After a dvd shrink backup operation, the nero burn begins but after a few instances into lead in it errors out...below is my erro log. I went over it and the only thing I see is Unspecified Recorder Error. Do I have a bad DVD burner. Its a Dell plug in module for a Latitud D800.
Thanks, Trisfter

trifster,
Welcome to the forum . You did a real good job of reading the log. There are 2 more items and they are related. One the burner does not recog the blank media and the other is Disc Manufacturer ID: WFKA11. Tried to Google for some more info and came up basically blank and I have never heard of that Manuf.. What I think is happening is the burner is having a problem w/ the lead-in
(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD R/RW, DVD+R DL.)
Disc Manufacturer ID: WFKA11, Media Type ID: 211, Product revision number: 0
Do you have any DVD's that you have already copied. If so insert a RW in the burner and then use DVDDecrypter in .iso mode to read the burned disk and after reading use .iso mode and write that compilation to the DVD. After reading you will get 2 files : one is a .mds and the other is a .iso. You want to click on the .mds to use that in the write mode. What I am doing is seeing if the burner will burn properly

Try making these two changes before you try again.
here:
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286143 (508:01.68, 4465MB)
Have shrink or nero recode produce smaller files sizes to keep from burning too close to the disks outer edge. In shrink goto: edit-->preferences, in the preferences tab choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.
here:
Burn process started at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)
Try bumping up the write speed to 4X, 2.4X is too slow, some burners and media don't do well at low speeds.
Give these two things a shot and see what happens.
EDIT:
@Car.Mike
I couldn't find anything on those disks either, but it does appear that the drive correctly recognizes those disks as shown here:
Disc Manufacturer ID: WFKA11, Media Type ID: 211, Product revision number: 0
This is then reflected in the media specific field as shown below.
Media Specific [16..63]:
00 00 03 57 46 4B 41 31 - 31 00 00 32 31 31 00 38 ...WFKA11..211.8
23 54 37 0A 02 5A 70 02 - C8 67 19 19 0A 0A 0E 0E #T7..Zp..g......
01 1C 1E 0B 0C 12 12 01 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
This suggests that the drive does contain a write strategy for those disks and therefore should be able to correctly write to them.

trifster,
Did some more research on that brand. Found out it is from Wealth Fair Investment Ltd and on another forum 1 person ( sorry but that is all I found ) tried them as they came from Fry's and the brand name on them was JVC. That individual returned them as they produced 1 coaster and one somewhat OK. I think that if you change blank media to a better brand that might help and do also what John123 stated.
Edit: John123
I saw that the DVD was recog but the problem if I am reading the log correctly is at the start and that corresponds to the leadin. There has to be a problem w/ those blank disks

The firmware is out of date on this drive:
Quote: Recorder: <SONY DVD+-RW DW-D56A> Version: PDS3
Looks like you need PDS7
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1965 Also, you left your serial numbers in the post. Its right below the quote. Go back and edit those out before your copy gets stolen.
Quote: Physical memory : 1023MB (1047792kB)
Free physical memory: 284MB (291836kB)
Memory in use : 72 %
You have plenty of memory, but what that showed me was you had many programs open while burning. One of them might be conflicting with the burn process. Try shutting down everything not needed for burning.
That media code almost looked like a joke for WTF? but it isnt very good media.
That looks like all i could see.

None-the-less, sketchy generic media. I believe nero wouldn't let me burn faster than 2.4x with that blank media. I will try the 4300 setting in shrink. Then if that doesn't help, I'll get some "real" media.
I do agree that Verbatium is by far the best made. It has been since the 2x days of CD-Burners.
RM Serial, thanks! I was looking for a line labeled serial and didn't see it.

The firmware update is important, just in case you didnt see that.
Also, you can change the target size in Nero. Sometimes you have to click on a More button or Options to see that part. Its on the burn page. It will have a pull down that says Custom, and lets you put in 4300. Its in the same place you select burn speed in most cases. If shrink is using Nero for the burn, then the shrink settings will work for changing target size.

We tried some generic data burns to DVD with NBR and it errored out with similar error as before. This was, of course, after DVD burner firmware update. Going to try different media next then if not get drive replaced as it is under warrenty. Thanks for your help so far.

Try some verbatim media, and if that fails too, then the drive replacement is probably the best way to go since its under warrenty. The only way to eliminate media as being the problem, is to use some good media. Some systems can get picky as to what media they like, but most perform well with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. The Tys are found under Sony, Maxell, Fuji brands, if the spindle says Made in Japan on it.
