Today I got a brand new LiteOn dvd burner and verbatim DVD+R. I decided to test out everything by backing up GodFather and put it onto a cd and played it. The first time it worked for about a good 2-3 hours. After I restarted my PS2 and did my swap magic again, it kept coming up with Not a Valid PS2 Disc. I have no clue what the problem could be other than the laser might be wore out from playing it for 2 or 3 hours but that doesnt make much sense. Can anyone help me out?

Update: I just got it to work again but things load rather slow, the music was a bit skippy, and some parts of the town didnt load so I had basically a clear city at some parts. Could this just be a sign of an old PS2? My SCHP is 39001

Try using DVD-Rs,the +Rs dont like to work well with old PS2s.

Or use TDK Brand Media DVDR+. I always use TDK DVDR+, it never fails.

a 39001 is a V7 and probably one of the Most compatible with any media be it +R or -R. the most likely problem is the booktype is not set to -ROM on the +Rs when they were burnt. if your burner supports booktyping then just set the booktype to -ROM, if it doesn't use -Rs instead.
