Bittorrent is killing me!

I am not a new user of bittorrent, but i have come across a problem which i can't seem to find the cause of.

Everytime i use bittorrent my connection speed goes to crap. I'm not just talking about the speed of torrents, i'm talking about everything!

This is the case for both computer on my network. If either of them have bittorrent on the connection turns bad.

I have used a virus scanner, and know about how to port forward.

Has anybody ever come across this or have any ideas?

You could do two things first make sure that windows built in firewall is turned off if you have another firewall also have you tried turning down your maximum upload speed as at first I didn't realise that it was set to 34kbps and I changed this to 16kbps then my download speed shot up from 10kbps to 60kbps.
