Shrink DVD clips into Powerpoint - need to convert files

I tried a similar question on another forum (general video discussion) but thought this forum might have wider readership.
Here's the situation. I have back-up DVDs (so non-copy-protected) of one of my favorite TV shows (and yes, I own all the seasons, but the originals are of course copy-protected). I'm doing an academic presentation in a couple of weeks in which I will use short video clips (usually 1-3 minutes each) embedded in my Powerpoint presentation. Powerpoint will let you insert video files very easily, but the formats it accepts -- .avi, .mpeg, .mpg, etc. -- are not the ones that Shrink made when I did the back-ups.
Arniebear replied to my original post in the other forum and told me how to use Shrink in re-author mode to pull out the short clips, and that worked perfectly (thanks again!). But of course, in re-author mode Shrink once again creates audio_ts and video_ts folders; the video_ts folder has .vob, .ifo, and .bup files. Arniebear suggested that I try a program called IMTOO Ripper (I don't have Nero), and I may do that, but I wanted to ask, what other programs would you recommend for making this vob-to-mpg (or vob-to-avi or whatever) conversion? It has to be a program that I can learn FAST as I leave for the conference in less than 2 weeks (eek). And a file that includes both audio AND video would, of course, be ideal (and maybe that's a naive statement, maybe they all do that, but I've never done any conversions so I really have no idea).
On my computer now, I have DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, RecordNow, Windows Movie Maker, PowerDVD, and Sonic MyDVD software. Sonic MyDVD will allow me to capture video, but I would have to convert my back-up DVDs to VHS and then do an analog conversion to my hard drive, which seems REALLY silly since I already have the clips in digital format.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
thanks in advance,
Karen in New Hampshire

Clonedvdmobile has a free 21 day trail and rips to several
different formats.
(As long as the video has already been decrypted.)
Its small and very easy to use and supports over 15 formats.
http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd-mobile.html
CloneDVD mobile converts your DVD movies quickly and easily into a format that your portable device (Sony PSP, Apple iPod Video, iAudio X5, Creative Labs ZEN Vision, etc) can play. You can also convert your DVDs to other file formats, such as DivX, XviD, AVI, MP4, etc.
Cheers and good luck with your presentation!

I think I will look at the trial versions of programs that Jizmak and Arniebear (on another forum) suggested. Squijello, glad your presentation went well and hope mine does too!
Thanks very much for your help.

Well, I tried CloneDVD. It seems to work perfectly -- i.e. I see the video clip, it goes through the process of converting it (I chose DivX so it's making an .AVI file), and it says it successfully finishes it. Powerpoint inserts it without a problem into the Powerpoint document. However, I get no picture -- just a black rectangle where the video is supposed to be. The AUDIO works fine. Can anyone figure out what I am doing wrong?
thanks,
Karen

It's Powerpoint 2003. I right-clicked and chose full screen and it's still a black rectangle with perfect audio, no video.
I used Shrink to re-author another 30 seconds or so, then tried to convert that .VOB file to .AVI. Exact same problem happened. The .VOB file plays fine in Shrink and in PowerDVD, so it seems fine, but somehow in the conversion the video goes away.
thanks,
Karen

Yes, I used CloneMobile too (the trial version). It said it worked, it looked like it worked, but the .VOB file, which plays fine in PowerDVD and DVD Shrink AS a .VOB file, will not play in anything in its converted .AVI format (DIVX format).

I looked at the link but I have no idea what it is and am wary of installing things that don't have a good explanation of what they do. What will that program do?

Thanks for the link in the PM, but again, I don't want to install something until I know exactly what it is for and what it is going to do. The web site says it will decompress video formats, but the files are just plain .AVI or .mpg files -- why would they need to be "decompressed" by this program?
I don't mean to be a pain, and I do appreciate your answers, but why won't the .AVI or .mpg files work as they are? When they are being encoded, there is nothing that says "this file is compressed, you'll need another program to decompress it."

Aaagggh, I'm going to scream. OK, I downloaded the file. I went back to Powerpoint and inserted the .AVI file. This time it showed the video clip's first frame (not a black rectangle), so I thought, yay, it's going to work. Well, ALL the video that got showed was the first frame -- after that the "video" is black. Audio, as usual, works fine.
Any idea why this is happening?

Just an update -- I did my conference presentation last Friday and it went very well! The trial version of IMTOO did a GREAT job of converting .VOB files in the video_ts folder (which Powerpoint cannot read) to .mpg files (which Powerpoint recognizes). I ended up using 8 short video clips embedded into the Powerpoint document -- most were only 1-2 minutes long so the trial version allowed me to encode the whole thing (well, in Shrink I had to encode double the time I needed since the trial version only did the first half, but that was a pretty easy work-around). Overall it worked so well that I will be buying the full version -- quite a bargain at $35!
Squijello and Arniebear (who answered my questions on another forum), thanks to both of you for your help with my presentation!

The trial version's icon on my desktop says ImTOO DVD Ripper 4, if that helps. I haven't bought the full version yet since this work week has been crazy -- will probably do that this weekend.
