Which processor would be the best for gaming?

The...AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+

or

The...AMD Athlon 64 3700+

A dual core processor dosent help with games does it?

Will games use dual core processors in the future?

Always go for the highest spec you can afford. This will help improve the life expectancy of your PC before it becomes outdated & will help make sure you have support for future technology.

I don't think games do make use of dual core technology at the moment, but they will soon. Games are getting more & more powerful all the time. Some manufacturers are strating to take advantage of the 64bit chipset now, such as Ubisoft with Farcry & Valve with Half Life 2. If you can afford the dual core processor then go for it.

I read this thread at extremetech.com it is a comparison of all of AMD's more popular processors. It shows (in bar graphs) how they perform in apps, games, etc. Heres the link

Yes absoloutely. Like you say you may have to add a video card because although it shares 256mb system RAM onboard systems rarely are of the same quality as a stand alone graphics card. As far as future proofing a PC, well, like you say a couple of years is probobaly a good estimate, but the AMD x2 core 64bit is a fantastic CPU. I have got an AMD3200+ 64 bit & it absoloutely flies!! Beats any Intel I have had anyday, despite running at an actual clock speed of around 2ghz.
