Ok first of all yes I have read more pages than I can remember on this subject. been at this on and off for the last 2 weeks. I have managed to find and download all the soft ware needed. I have followed both guides fot PAL and NTSC. (The PAL version is included with GT4 download kit. so I get from 6.xGB down to 4.2GB and it all fits on DVD disc nicely. So using swapdisc 3.6 and a fliptop I load backup and it starts great but just after "SONY PRESENTS" and just before "polyphony Digital" I notice a very small padlock the size of an Ant (ENGLISH SIZE) POPS UP IN TOP LEFT CORNER. anybody got any ideas on this one??? or do I just let my 2 kids carry on beating each other up over the original copy

Nothing to worry about at all...

Don't know if this helps, but I couldn't get past the Polyphony screen either at first.
It might be because you're not actually supposed to downsample the opening movie when using the Rip kit, whereas in one of the old tutorials it said to downsample all of them.
What I did was instead of reburning it all, just quickly repeatedly press X after the SONY Presents screen. This should skip the POLYPHONY screen and the opening movie. Then you'll get to the menu, and once in you can go to the options and make it so the opening movie won't be played again, so you won't have to worry about it ever again.
Hope that works.

Thankyou you are indeed a saint it worked a treat. I was ready to give up and go the easy route of a rar file but I do like to learn things. Just one more point for future ref would the opening movie "not" to be downsampled be the 1st in the extracted folder? and does anyone have a link to a more up todate tutorial

I can't remember off the top of my head, coz i did it ages ago and never re-did it without downsampling the opening movie, but I think it was the movie with the name that had some numbers in it????
I think that you're also supposed to not downsample two others (the closing movie and something else), but I can't remember them either. The forum that I saw it on is having maintenance checks at the moment, so I'll let ya know when it comes up again.

Here's the changed instructions from the Sonix kit for the downsampling.

Follow the instuctions from the .pdf until you get to the downsampling. On this part do "not" downsample these movies.
20r60r.pss
ending_us.pss
opening_us.pss ('us' bit depends on region i.e might be opening_aus.pss)
pv.pss
start_game.pss
start_game_old.pss

Downsample all other pss files to 45 percent.

After that follow the .pdf instructions to rebuild and do not forget to patch the files before closing the ripping tool.
