Here's the thing. Whenever I play a backed-up game, even if the game works perfectly from beginning to end, my PS2 sounds like it's working way too hard (I'm pretty sure it's the sound of the laser tracking back and forth). But when playing a store bought game I don't hear anything like this, just the regular, comforting whirr we have all come to love.
Has anyone else run across this? Is it normal? And if not, does anyone know how to stop it?

P.S. I'm using the newest version of the Swap Magic DVD mod.

what kind of dvd media are you using? the laser has to work harder to read the cheaper dvd media.

Well that's the weird thing. I've only ever used Verbatim discs and everyone seems to say that they're some of the best ones. I've even tried to use lesser quality ones just to see if they perform worse so I could start narrowing down what's wrong but they seem to do the exact same thing.

hmmph... yeah, i ONLY use verbatim datalifeplus dvd+r (burned at no more than 4x) and can't recall ever having a problem with the 100+ games that are on that media. in my experience it's been more reliable than the taiyo yuden, ritek and sony.

if it plays the manufactured games fine, i would say that it's the dvd media. though there SHOULD be a noticable discrepency in the peformance between your verbatim dvds and the cheapie media you have experimented with. if the load times aren't excessive and the game plays smoothly i wouldnt worry about it. keep an ear out for clicking though. especially before the splash screen when loading the S.M. dvd. loud distinct clicking is the laser bumping up against the disk which means you could have some laser health issues or badly pressed S.M. disks. those boot disks can scratch up your lens pretty bad.

Or they could be fakes. Please post the media ID of those discs.

Well I use Verbatim discs and have never encountered any problem, the media ID will need to be posted to determine if they are genuine or fake.

Read the - Games stutttering and skipping or just not booting up at all?

It has a detailed guide with pictures on cleaning your laser.
